INSTALL: Steering Wheel Interface 2006 Taco 4d 4wd JBL ( SWI-JACK )

I don't think the power wire is your problem because if you didn't have power, then you wouldn't see any lights on the SWI at all.

 

When I try to program it: I "hold down the button as i turn the key to acc". but instead of turning on, then turning off when i release the button, it takes a while to light up. Then when I try to press it 8 times to program it, it blinks 1...2...3...4.5.6.

Tried it 4 times with the same result each time.

any advise?

 

I just hooked up my HU Kenwood DDX896. One word SOLID! One question though, where in the hell do you stuff the wires into? I have the PAC for the JBL too. And I was just stuffing things left and right. How did you get your pac steering wheel module way down there? My wires are not that long to be mounted. I'll shot up some pic later. So to answer your question. I made all my wiring extra long, like 1-3 feet long. But the real "trick" is that I placed the SWI device on the passenger floor, then ran wire ( with a hanger jimmy hand made mechanism ) to feed all my extra cable up through the dash. So, I'm thinking the way to describe this is to work backwards. Cable length was Never a problem for me. I was able to "double sticky" the SWI just left of my glovebox by starting at the glovebox, then trimming wire after I ran it through the dash. Hope you made your wires long!

 

Also, know that bundling cables and stuffing shi* was a bitc* for me too. I need to yank my HU again so I can extend the RCA cables into my glovebox for more of my nerd videos and I am dreading it, only because of stuffing cable. The only tips I can think of are to get tape and wrap stuff up, I have a single DIN so it may be easier, but man it blows stuffing cable safely and securely. Wires get jacked around during install, this is why it's EXTRA important to make secure initial connections. Honestly, I had not one connection issue, I connected, yanked, tugged twisted before I considered it a successful connection at any wire intersection !

I pre-fabed the wires via soldered the wires, the only wires that go partially crimped were the two white wires and the green/blue wire for the SWI-JACK to the HU. Ziptie everything, looks very professional if you ask me. The trouble is now to stuff the wires in. It's gonna be a tight fit.

 

Alright well i got it working.. still dont know if I used the right resistor (i guess time will tell). It said to "use a 560 ohm but for jbl to replace the 150ohm with a 560ohm" which seems like it might be a mis print or something. I dont have the JBL system but am currently running the 150 ohm resistor and after alot of screwing around, finally got it working. Did have to un tap my red wire that was going to constant 12v, and tap it to ignition 12v.

guys after you installed this did the lights in the steering buttons work? I installed my alpine 9887 (i had the JBL system) after which the lights no longer worked. Is there a provision on this to power the lights or do i have to do something additional??

My sterring wheel button lights still work after installing it, but I don't have the JBL system.

 

im looking to do this upgrade on a 2005 tacoma with a stock stereo system, (type 2 standard i believe its called), would it be possible? or would it only work with an upgraded stereo system? and if possible, what steering wheel interface would be compatible?

 

I used the Axxess SWI, easy as pie to install 4 wires used and it auto recognizes the SW control buttons. Everything works as good or better than factory. No lag. No resisters. No programming.

 

I just bought the Metra Axxess ASWC on Amazon for $41.96; i have a completely un-used and uninstalled PAC SWI-Jack if anyone wants it....including packaging!

I heard so many horror stories about the PAC unit that i didn't even try and put it in, and after reading that this new Metra one works and a hell of a lot easier, i was sold.

I'll be popping it between an Alpine CDA-9986 and a 2007's NON-JBL steering wheel controls/wiring.

 

Sorry., but I gotta ask. Is this required for non JBL install as well, or is this just a JBL thing.

 

JBL, or non-JBL has nothing to do with it. It all depends on what aftermarket HU you install. A few are compatible and will make the steering wheel controls work, but most will not.

 

ok guys i need help i tried the axxess swi and it was not working properly. It programmed correctly with the lights flashing and what not, but it did not work. I got very angry and the interface broke. So now i want your info on which one to buy and i will try this again. 2010 sr5 non jbl with Alpine inu w900bt. thank all your info will be appreciated

 

Metra Axxess ASWC - i have an 07, non-jbl, and installed an alpine CDA 9886, the thing works mint. (See the install of the ASWC here...)

Great write up! Just finished installing the PAC SWI-RC to a Pioneer AVIC Z120 using a 560 Ohm resistor, and everything worked perfect first try! Thanks for the info
