Where Have You Off-Roaded Today? 3rd Gen

I have the ARB clone one off of Amazon. It works as advertised and it’s only $40.

 

Fun trail with the kids! We pull over there as well and sometime’s will cook lunch

 

It was fun! I am still new to off-roading and was happy to find this spot online. Not too bad, about an hour away from home. I am in North County, wish there were a few places closer. We are looking to do the sculptures in Borrego Springs this weekend.

Any other places you would call "easy" locally? Looking at:

• Otay Mesa Truck Trail
• Palomar Divide Trail
• Black Mountain (Romona)
• Other trails in Borrego

I have an account on TrailsOffRoad.com. Surprisingly they do not list Otay Mesa or Harrison Grade! I found Harrison grade on OverlandBound and then confirmed it was easy on YouTube.

 

Otay Mesa is pretty easy. The only exception being the meeting of other vehicles going the opposite direction. I prefer weekdays to minimize that.

 

All those trails are great. Unfortunately there’s nothing in our backyard. I’m in North County as well. Escondido/Ramona are the closes ones. Check out coyote canyon in Borrego before it gets too hot. I saw stock Tacomas doing it. Plus the kids will love the water crossings

Did a group run of the back way to Mt Lemmon on sat with a bunch of people from the Tucson Tacomas group. Turnout was great, we had 15 trucks.

 

I'll make a strong recommendation for Bee Canyon in the San Bernardino National Forest. I'm not sure exactly where you are in North County, but it's about a 75 minute drive to the trailhead from downtown Escondido. This is one of my wife's favorite day trips for her and I and our 10 year old son. You can hit the trail head at 9:00 am and be in the town of Idyllwild around lunch time. There are some great little shops and restaurants where you can spend a few more hours, and then you can just take Highway 74 back down the mountain and head home.

Technically, the trip is a couple of different trails, as you start on 5S07 (Bee Canyon Truck Trail) and then transition to 5S09 (San Jacinto Ridge Truck Trail), which takes you to Highway 243. Then it's a short drive into Idyllwild. When you're done for the day, you take Highway 243 further along to Highway 74, which will drop you back down into Hemet. If you want to make it an overnight trip, you can take Highway 74 the other direction from 243 into Garner Valley, and hook up with 6S13 (Thomas Mountain Truck Trail). There are some great yellow post camp sites on that road (the Toolbox Springs Yellow Post sites).

 

i have not thought of the Nate Harrison rd(back way to palomar) in a long long time. it use to have a less politically correct name .. anyhow if you are up for a gnarly hike there use to be these rope slides down into the canyon you could hike down to the creek that runs through. its is rough but its amazing down there. we use to go hike it as kids.

i have not got the chance to really get out there in my tacoma yet but i use to ride dirtbikes out in the Corral Canyon area if you are in San Diego. there is some 4x4 to be had out there. 4 corners.

 

Gorman, CA off road park. At the 4x4 practice area, really intense setups hahhaa took it easy as I was alone.

BLM land near White Sands 2 or so weeks ago

 

Curious, do you have the SL rated Falken Wilkpeaks or the E rated? I like these tires but the E rated are like 54 pounds each and the SL are 44 pounds for a 265/75/16. Will be getting new tires at some point to upgrade from the stock. Afraid any E rated will be a bit heavy as a daily driver 95% of the time. Afraid the SL are too much of a compromise durabilty wise offroad. Have been looking at C1 rated Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs as a middle of the road.

I see a ton of Wildpeaks but most never state if they are using the SL or E rated versions.

 

I have the E rated, it hasn't been that big of a deal for me, this is coming from the stock wranglers that Toyota put on. Went up from 265/70-16 to 265/75-16 and yeah it was a little bit harsher at first but now it just feels normal. The weight will have a bit of a penalty, but ultimately i don't think that's a big deal for me personally

 

Good to know. What was the hit on MPG? And braking distance? I drive like an old woman so not concerned on acceleration!

 

Of the top of my head, maybe .5 mpg hit? but not 100% sure, it was a few months ago. Also went up an inch or so so that probably had an impact too.

A couple of trips from the last week. A few days ago, I hiked up about a 600 foot elevation straight up to get to the top of a cliff, the one with the photo of my Taco.

Just bushwhacking on steep game trails, and really messy rough hiking.

Have to be careful as there are grizzly and black bears in this area, plus elk and moose and cougar. I saw scat from all on my hike up. I go prepared though, my pack has bear sprays, first aid, spare clothing, spare food, water, etc.

End of day, I ran into a young guy who was out hunting black bear. He said he saw me coming down and thought to himself "holy shit, that guy is really going for it."

It was fun. Next week I am going to go back and there is another high cliff about 1,000 foot above this one I want to visit, weather permitting.
