My grandmother passed in January of 2021. My dad is the PR of her estate and has been trying to access the funds in Computershare for over a year. Initially they didn't want to accept that the account holder had passed. He has gotten Medallion Signature Guarantees sometimes 5 times for a single stock and each time there is an issue. When all of the requested documents are provided, they still say they don't have everything they need. They keep moving the goalpost. They didn't receive the documents. etc etc...

It is an expensive and tedious process to get notaries, certified mailings, etc. Their attorney has had to get involved because they spent a year and got nowhere. Even the attorney is getting frustrated by their lack of progress. None of the other accounts have been this difficult to access. With over 200 BBB complaints we are clearly not alone.

 

We only have one side of the story, but if they're making life so difficult, you should have hired an attorney a while ago to light a fire under their butts.

I've been executor of a deceased's estate, and dealing with the banks and brokerages (never had to deal with CS) was as easy as sending in the certified documents showing proof of death.

Buying from them or transferring from Webull? Webull will go out of their way to make it difficult for you. The path of least resistance is to open a fidelity account, do an ACATS transfer from webull to fidelty and then do the DRS process through Fidelity.

Alternatively, if you just want to add to your warchest, you can buy directly from computershare and an account will be setup after the purchase is done.

Ok I am sure we bull will try and fuck around. I will start on getting all that done. I dont have time for this crap. After the account is set up I will just buy directly thru CS.

Here's some light reading for this evening.

 

You buy first and then the account is setup in CS (it's ass-backwards, I know)

Shares are bought in batches weekly and then you'll get a statement in the mail, at which point you can set up your online account.

From "purchase" to finished takes about 7-10 days

Please note, you are not able to set a buy price. You will get whatever the market price is when the batch purchase goes through.

CS is not a brokerage. Their model moreso supports people who set it and forget it on monthly purchases.

 

You're right. And I'm only getting this second hand from my dad so this is obviously meaningless and CS is infallible.

Their attorney is even having a hard time getting anywhere so apparently lighting a fire under their butts doesn't mean much. Computershare may be the best place to hold your shares, but they sure as hell wont be easy for your kids to access once you're gone...
