    Story Time With Gritto :)

My gunsmith cut the Mauser down from 24" to 22" , recrowned and put on a new front sight.
Also tapped it for a scope, but I removed the scope and put on a Williams aperture sight.
A shot past 100 yards at a Whitetail is uncommon on State land here.

    Here's the thing.
I used to reload metallic cartridges and spent a lot of time working up a load for the Mauser.
My best load was a 150 gr Sierra spitzer with IMR 4895 powder (the standard powder for 30-06 in WW2, go figure).
It was capable of a little over 1" (Minute Of Angle) at 100 yards off a bench.

Mind you, no matter how much people brag on their milsurp rifles on the internet, that's rare.
Military rifles in the world wars were accepted into service with 6-8 MOA accuracy, depending on which military.
    Really.
A rifle that could do 4 MOA or better was considered exceptional and suitable for a marksman /sniper.
Nowadays, the US Army won't accept an M4 unless it does better than 4 MOA with issue ammunition.

This is from memory, so feel free to correct me.

    I love story time
I’m shocked at the acceptable tolerance for military weapons! 6-8 MOA?? What, just shoot him again? I’ll take 1-2 MOA @100 yds with open sights all day, every day!
You rattled my memory and I dug this out. It’s what I feed my .308 as well as Varget. I had no idea if it’s history!
Working up loads is tedious and awesome. Worth the effort.

    Seriously.
A guy on the AR Discussion Forum (maybe Molon?) linked the documentation.
    Sorry, didn't bookmark it.
Pretty sure it was also discussed on InRangeTV (YouTube).

[edit] Now that I think about it, I'm certain Karl discussed it on InRangeTV

It should also be remembered that issue ammo at the time wasn't as consistent as now.
