Has anyone noticed their backup camera contrast is weak. Even with the adjustment maxed out. The camera lens is good no clouding or scratches. The dealer says it is normal, I have seen another that is much better. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

look into the DIR mod on here from @daveeasa that should help quite a bit with the camera when your lights are on. It turns off the license plate lights when you put the truck into reverse which kills the glare from them and helps with the picture quality.

I actually bought an aftermarket camera to see how it might compare with the OEM one. Came with a handle too but I think the bracket would fit the OEM handle. Modifying the harness to be plug and play shouldn’t be too hard but I believe the OEM camera is 6V and not sure if the one I got is 6 or 12.

I haven’t had any time to try it out. One day…

Can confirm that kit is about a 25% improvement.

The backup camera on the 3rd gens are not great. I rented a Corolla a couple weeks back while on vacation and the backup image quality was incredible-much better than my Tacoma.

    Work in progress...
The New Corolla surpasses all expectations and is greater than ever before. The new Corolla comes standard with an integrated back-up camera with projected path.

I'm running the DIR setup from @daveeasa and it helps a ton at night.

But overall the OEM camera is pretty bad quality. Both my Fusion and my wife's Crosstrek have cameras that are probably double the quality of Toyota's.

Don't even get me started on the HD Kenwood cameras they sell with their high-end units. Those things are easily 1440p and better than most security cameras..
If you find/make a drop in kit to replace the OEM camera, I'm sure the forums would light up! I'd get on that wait list..

I can not find the camera contrast adjustment setting. I see the screen setting, but not for the camera. I wonder if my SR5 has it. Can someone give me the path to find it? (and yeah the camera picture quality really sucks)

Yeah, agreed on the potential interest. I should get that going. If I could source the camera cheaper it might be a legit option. I think I paid over $100 for it.

Probably the ideal option for me would be to just supply an adapter harness to make it plug and play. That could get tricky if it’s 12V since we would need ignition switched power for anytime use. Grabbing power off the reverse circuit could work for basic operation but most of us really like the anytime option.

I use my Anytime front and rear camera setup almost every time I drive my truck, so I second the adapter harness for plug and play.

Wonder if it had to be 6V if you could incorporate a step-down transformer to drop the voltage running through the adapter harness.

Either way I'm sure you'll knock it out of the park like always!

Good suggestion. A step up voltage converter would make it easier. I’ll grab one.
