Simple Question

2006 Toyota Tacoma. I want to get rid of my 16" steel wheels . I hear Toyota modified 16"TRD wheels such that my steel TPMS sensors will work. Is it finally true, Ive tried to make the swap before ,didnt work.

 

First I've heard of any modification to the wheels.

You can make the swap by flipping the sensor upside down. If that doesn't work, you can use TPMS straps.

 

Last year ,I decided to buy a set of the trd wheels from Toyota.$1000.00 for 4?????????? I was told when I got there that the trd alloys would accept the steel tpms sensors. No way says the guy putting on the wheels, I need different tpms sensors after all! Aw shit, so I get my money back ,& amble on. I really like the style of the wheels. I`m also really confused about the whole thing now. No big deal, but I sure would like some alloy wheels on the truck.16s or 17s are fine with me .

 

You paid $1000 for the stock TRD offroad wheels? People sell them on here for $300.

Sure you don't mean the TRD FJ wheels?

No, I never did buy the wheels,mainly because they were too expensive. But nevertheless , I was told by the tire guy at Toyota (Asheville N.C) that I`d have to buy new tpms sensors ,for alloy wheels. That really did it! I see hat the TRD wheels are sold on Ebay etc,for a hell of a lot less than Toyota. Still, the question ,will my steel TPMS sensors work on alloy wheels? KPT probably has the viable answer in his post.

 

Discount tire worked with me when I went through this. They tried flipping them for my new wheels without success (though this has worked for many). They ended up solving the problem with tpms straps. I've had them for 30k mi with no issues.
