Ah I see what you're saying! But it took me a while to find the right router bit. I think this might be easier to do, honestly. Just cut a 1/4" x 1/4" slot 1/4" down from the edge per the diagram from earlier with this:

Then glue a piece of spline. Looks like spline is kind of hard to find in 1/4" x 7/16", though. So maybe I'll have to do it your way. Gotta find a track saw now

 

If you want to go the router way you can make a tongue on the table saw with some leftover flooring. Just rip it to what you need. And watch your fingers. lol

 

That's for cutting a groove. You need a tongue cutter.

 

I would just make it a lap joint instead.

1. Cut floor boards flush with track saw.
2. Nail appropriate sized square dowels along the joint edge to support the nose.
3. Remove bottom side of the nose to the appropriate depth with router.
4. Put the nosing down, put wood glue in the lap, slam her home, face-nail with finish nails.

 

I might have to. It looks like 1/4” x 7/16” slip tongue is hard to find.

We would want a groove and then apply slip tongue / dowel to it. I imagine it would be easier as we want to match the groove on the nosing as best we can. I looked at tongue bits and I couldn’t find one that would easily slip into the nosing.

That’s… actually probably a winner. Seems easier than what I had in mind. With the lap joint we’d have more freedom to snug the nosing to the flush end as well. Wouldn’t be married to the width of the new tongue.

Thank you. Just installed the baseboard trim, filled and touched up the nail holes. Once that dries, crapper goes back.

 

Went to the local hardwood specialist and they had 1/4” x 7/16” spline made out of oak. Exactly what I needed. This will fit great with some room for wood glue.

 

Rehung the doors last night. Bath and stairwell side are white and room sides are the light grey. Edge color was based on what room the door opened into. Had to drill new 2 1/8" bore holes as the originals were 1 5/8". Made a simple jig using a small scrap piece of plywood. Worked like a charm.

 

Breezeway cover construct started Monday.


My builder (I know my limits) took the project to make some money naturally but really wanted the job because it is INTERESTING. Conceptually I could do most of it..........but hoisting a 6x10 16+ft beam..........

Just SAY $15K.

Closest local known name builders all in the $24-$32K range.



....................disconnect and re-route 120V and 240V lines to the heat pump - the south east POST and south beam of the cover are right there. Builder communicated this to me yesterday - we all thought it would clear. Store run required. PITA!

 

$4K in labor? Did he look at the plans? Beam pockets with new 4x6 or tripled 2x6. Possible need to replace headers if undersized. There's a reason your other low bid was $24K.

 

He is kind of a nutty guy, in a weird genius way. No header replacement (4x8 min existing) necessary and the post areas are all quite accessible. That is the easy part.

I forgot to note, the licensed roofer is separate at $1500. The big bids included start to finish. I'm guessing an electrician would have been $500-$600 for the heat pump side and the disconnects I did on the shop side as well.

A little bit tough to compare apples to apples, but all his references checked out - and he is exactly as described.

Lastly - I so wanted to do this all by myself, but I work slow............

 

Yeah, for insurance. My contractor is NOT a licensed roofer. Yes save a couple hundred dollars, but they won't help with damage later AND yes most modern shingle warranty coverage required a licensed and certified installer.

Damn, I don't think I could live in an area with all those restrictions. Here in bum-fk PA it's just about anything goes...
