The original coils were just replaced with Denso coils from the dealer last weekend, and I also insist on Denso parts for anything involving the engine, so I'm guessing that means they are OEM?

Kind of a tossup, as it is very rain and a bit chilly here in Southeast PA today, but it was fairly warm when this really manifested itself last Friday. It is at its absolute worst when the truck is first started after sitting for several hours or overnight.

Gotchya. By warm startup, I didn’t mean outside temps. I meant starting your truck 10-20 minutes after you last drove it and the engine is still warm. I’d still be willing to bet fuel injector. Run that past your mechanic. If I understand it correctly, fuel will leak in and will essentially flood/too much to ignite and needs to evaporate before proper air/fuel ratio allows ignition again.

If from the dealer than OEM. But not all denso parts are OEM quality.

Wouldn't it have four fuel injectors?

the CEL should show which cylinder is missing… unless all are missing. You didn’t specify so I assumed it was just one cylinder missing. If it’s all of them, then I doubt injectors are the problem then.

I have no idea which cylinder is missing; When I ran the diagnostic at AutoZone last Friday, it was cylinder #1. Replacing the first two coils allowed my mechanic to get the CEL to go out, but it came back on hours later; Replacing the other two made the CEL go out. It's been three days, and the CEL has not come back on at all; The truck runs good. It does vibrate at idle a bit more than seems to be normal, but this has been going for years and I've just gotten used to it. I liken it to the fact that it's a base model pickup truck and not designed for comfort and/or refinement, combined with the fact that it is now a 12-year old base model pickup truck that's fast approaching 150K miles.

Sounds like you should wait to see if it repeats. Mine was very intermittent. Figure out the cylinder it occurs on (might be a pending code until it happens enough to trigger the CEL). If it’s cylinder 1 and you’ve replaced coils/sparks. I’d bet it’s cylinder 1 injector.

At least the price of an injector isn't too hateful!

On another note, my dad has a snowblower; It is four-stroke, and we use premium in it. I had two red plastic containers full of premium gasoline, some of which was up to a year old (though it did have stabilizer in it). The snowblower wasn't needed anymore, so I put the remaining fuel reserves in the Tacoma last month; It has seemingly run fine until now. My coworker who is quite mechanically inclined does not think a few gallons of potentially stale gasoline would have caused the symptoms that I am describing, either directly or indirectly.

I was tasked with cleaning out the painting booth at work today, so I actually wore a mask by choice; My glasses didn't fog up!

The truck has been sitting since 9:30am and I started it just now to leave work, and it was sputtering; As I was typing this, the CEL came on again...

scan it up. The best problem you can hope for is one you can diagnose. Intermittent problems are the worst

So I took it to my mechanic; Just like weekend, it's a misfire in cylinder #1. Based on the symptoms I'm descriptions, he too thinks it's the injector.

When you replaced the plugs, did you ever check the gap? Might not of been the coil at all could be the gap.

I would of swapped another coil in cylinder 1 and seen what happened. If fine and the code moves to a different cylinder then you know it’s the coil. If not I would of pulled and check plug. Moved to a different cylinder if it seemed ok. Then seen if it moved

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Swing by Anal Zone and pick up a valve cover and spark plug tubes gasket set for about $40. I’m pretty sure yours are toast

My mechanic could put that in when he does the injector?
