Dakota Universal Speedo Corrector: An easy alternative to the HyperTech

Anyhow, I pulled the device today, spliced the wire back together, and I had been running it without a correction factor in the interim - in the event that the signal was getting used by something (which it looks like it was).

I've installed a hypertech unit that I bought new off ebay for $168. Compared to the Dakota and materials to install, it's about a $40 difference.

I am about to go road test it.

 

I’m curious to see if it works. The way I understand it, the hyper tech is just essentially a plug and play version of the Dakota, meaning it just intercepts the speed input and modifies it, which means it wouldn’t work. But I could very well be wrong. I’m learning a lot from this thread.

 

Hypertech unit works well. The model number for the 2012 Tacoma is 730117.

I didn't get the truck over 45 mph on the way to work, but compared to my GPS the speed is tracking within 1mph difference, the speedo is now reading a touch fast.

Programmed the unit using the software that came by DVD. Using the stock tire size from my door jam and current tire size, it gave a correction factor of 1.07. Software will also calculate if you have non-stock gearing, mine are stock but, it's an option.

Because tires are about 4 years old I'm guessing the diameter is a little smaller and I probably need a correction factor of more like 1.05-1.06 to be 100% accurate. I'm going to wait until I test it on the highway at higher speed to see if it is very far off before messing with it though.

I did leave the USB cable plugged in and routed down to behind the coin drawer near the fuse box so I could reprogram if necessary with my laptop and not have to disassemble my dash again.

As for the actual install - it is stupidly easy. There is a small unit that is programmed via the computer, it plugs into a circuit board, which has a slot for the wire harness and a second wire harness that plugs into the instrument cluster. There is plenty of room behind the instrument cluster to fit everything.

Thanks everyone. Hopefully I didn't mess anything up sending the modified signal to my ECU and ABS. I did read in the Dakota instructions that the signal should not be going to ABS... That said, I don't appear to be having any issues.

 

Damn, really appreciate the work and info you guys put into this thread. Hoping I got this all correct, but, it seems that the Hypertech would be the way to go for my 2015 4.0, automatic.

 

If you read back a little bit on this page, it appears it won’t work on 2012-2015.

Dakota Digital SGI-100BT per the OP's directions on my 2009 SR5 v6 6-speed with 4.88s and 34s. Write-up matched perfectly for my truck, and the now corrected speedo is spot on! The bluetooth version and the DD app are great - makes calibration super easy as the app includes a GPS speedometer. Thanks so much for your write-up OP!

Do you recollect the settings you selected with the app interface? And which output did you use? My speedo is stuck at 30mph. Changing the frequency has dramatic effects.
