There are some EVs out there, like Tesla, that can be the one and done for some people. For the rest that have or need a second vehicle, an EV is a slam dunk.

I think Toyota said they would be shooting for around a 250 mile range in its run of the mill vehicles, that would work for me when you factor in weather and other variables.

Honestly, in San Diego, where fuel and energy costs have gone crazy, ev and solar make sense. My solar panels produce 14,000 kwh a year. My model 3
Has used 9000 kWh in 4 years, 40,000 miles. I usually overproduce by 4000kwh
Yearly, plenty for my 2025 taco ev!!

250 works for me too, just pull into the garage and plug it in. it will be warm or cool and at the charge level you specified.

I’ve spent zero on my 3 in 4 years, just drive it. What’s crazy, after 4+ years, it’s still a kick in the pants to drive.

Yep, many companies are developing SS batteries to reduce their use of Lithium, Cobalt and other minerals. Toyota has been doing R and D on this for years. They don't like to intro stuff until they think they have it right. But Word is Toyota SS batteries will be in hybrids in the next few years as a test bed for use in full EV's.

I'm not holding my breath on SS batteries. They've been just 5 years away for as long as I can remember, sort of like nuclear fusion. The cell chemistry of all-solid state cells is in general the same as of liquid electrolyte cells. Anode materials comprise carbon, titanates, Li-alloys and metallic lithium; cathode materials are Li-based oxides (LCO, NCA), and phosphates (LFP), vanadium oxide [51] and future microstructural 5V materials. So they don't do much in the way of reducing metal usage. Well, except that their energy density is greater, so a smaller battery can be used. The increased energy density is what I find interesting. Nearly everything I use nowadays, from my powdered garden tools, my shop tools, and my car all use batteries. Smaller batteries would be welcome compared to the ones I lug around now.

Well whatever, many companies are building production plants for them and using fewer resources compared to lithium.

"Prototypes are easy, production is hard" - somebody

All I've heard about is companies building prototype production for SS batteries. SS batteries still use lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, etc, so its not like they are a magic bullet and eliminate the need for those metals. I can count seven battery powered devices that all could use better batteries just sitting on my desk. Think about a technology that would significantly increase battery capacity and lower cost. SS batteries in cars would be awesome, but the market for all things battery powered is even bigger.

Don't get me wrong I want SS batteries. They will be a huge improvement. Maybe Nissan and Toyota are actually doing something, but I've become jaded by all the press releases that never do anything but make promises of "production in just 5 years." By the time 5 years passes everyone forgets and they just promises again "production in just 5 years." My belief is these types of press releases in general have no real substance and are just to prop up flagging stock prices.

The solar constant is about 1.38 kW per square meter. A really good sized roof *might* get you 2.5 square meters. Let’s round up and you end up with ~3.5kW.

Let’s take 0.25kWh per mile for a Tesla. So that’s 14 miles per charging hour. Let’s assume 8 hours of reliable charging. Now we’re up to 112 miles per day before considering any costs or losses.

That’s your theoretical limit if you assume you live in the average solar constant, have zero inefficiencies in conversion, and can park outside in direct sunlight for 8 hrs a day. So in theory, a 100 mile daily range will work for many people. It’s meeting all the other conditions that will be hard.

Aptera claims they will be able to solar charge too. They have covered all of the horizontal surfaces with solar and have a super efficient system, so who knows they maybe able to run totally on sunlight.
scroll down a little bit for their interactive solar charger claims.

I ordered an Ocean (launch model) for my wife. It has a solar roof, 550 HP and a ten year warranty that the battery will be 75%. She has chargers at work so it's a no brainer. Can't wait to get it.

Will Toyota get into the home solar roof and energy storage business?

    Tesla sells both.

Right now I’m 54 and hopefully I’ll be dead when they all force us to drive this shit. I want to keep my current Toyota until the wheels fall off. I have no interest nor am I excited about this new technology. I know these cars will be overpriced and I have no interest paying all that money.

Not right now but our options will change. Still a while to go. I guess I’m all upset because I have no interest in ev or the prices offerings. That’s all.
