Hopefully they get you fixed up. The nice thing with the Shimano service, if you need a part replaced they have it on hand and go ahead and do it. Hopefully the reel comes out nice and smooth.

After 20 years the grease on any reel dries out and the movement will stiffen up.

Just got back 5 spinning reels I sent in, couple of Shimano baitrunners, couple of Penns and a Daiwa. All from the 80s and I fished them hard in the surf. Haven't used them in the last 20 years, so they were due for some love. It's like having new reels again with upgraded drag washers. Highly recommend this service, now I just gotta get out there and wet a line.

Thanks Don! Was great meeting you. I’ve gotten a hold of the nav points to Portsmouth Island so I’ll have to send you some photos when I make it over there.

Here’s an example of corrosion treatment. This line roller, which in the case of this Penn Spinfisher V 3500 includes a ball bearing, was covered in oxidation and all the parts were fused together. This is a super important component in spinning reels, a stuck line roller puts friction on the line, makes an ungodly noise, and makes it harder to fight the fish.

I treat corrosion like this by soaking in evaporust and using a fine wire brush.

I just received my reel back from @Hook78 and I can attest that his quality service and communication are top notch! Everything worked out well and efficient even though he had to wait for a part. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend his services to anyone! Definitely would send my reels back to him

All caught up on local service, can turn reels around in a few days if no parts are required.

Just ran in to the same thing this weekend while pompano fishing in FL, everything is smooth but when I cast it screeches like a banshee. Wasn't sure what the heck was going on so I swapped out for a spare spinning reel I carry incase of a bad backlash before something internally blew up. Pretty sure its just the level wind bearing needing some attending, forgot to open them up this winter for maintenance. :annoyed: Definitely gonna keep OP in mind for some spinners in the near future.

If you hear a higher pitched squeal that’s usually metal on plastic where the lubricant has completely dried out. On spinners this commonly happens at the line roller, which is typically a metal roller in a plastic bushing. Becomes a nice whine on the retrieve when dry. One exception is for conventional or casting reels with a level wind. If bone dry, the pawl can make a screech on the worm gear like fingernails on a chalk board because the tip is so thin.

If you have a bearing go bad it’s a lower pitched sound, scratchy and rough. You’ll feel it as much as you hear it.

I have, Avets are great to work on. Very nicely put together. If I had tons of money just sitting around I would replace my TLDs with Avets.

I have barely looked into this thread, so please excuse me if this has been discussed many times in the past. I know this is a very old style of reel.

I have a penn 10 fishing reel which I have owned for 25 years, and it’s never been professionally serviced.
Unfortunately it’s been dropped on the crank handle and it appears the crankshaft is bent a little. I have not disassembled anything to find out.

But if the crank shaft is bent, is it worth repairing this reel? I’m thinking I can buy a more modern import real that will perform smoother for a fraction of the cost.

In 50 years of fishing I have always used spinning reels and this is the only level wind that I ever purchased.

I would normally only use this for lead core fishing, trolling small lakes for trout.

Can you send me a photo of the reel or post it here? Or just confirm that it looks like this:

    6860653B-36B3-4D92-B907-DB8AD169BE68.jpg

If so, most likely the bridge assembly is what would need to be replaced. It includes a gear sleeve which is what the main gear slides over, and which the handle attaches to:

    B3384421-17F4-4C0F-868E-42C5278CC5A3.jpg

Assuming that’s the only part that’s damaged, this is very easy to swap out as part of a service. $19 part including shipping.

As far as whether it’s worth servicing and keeping or replacing, the Penn 10 is well known for being a sturdy reel that can handle larger fish than many other reels it’s size. If it’s in good shape and the bent sleeve is the only issue, I’d consider keeping it. If it has exterior corrosion, the inside is probably worse and I’d consider replacing it with a modern Penn or Shimano.

If you’d like me to service it and replace the part just let me know.

Thank you for the advice. I can clean & oil it & if I can get the parts cheap enough I will fix it.

But I don’t think that’s the only part that’s damaged. Something is wrong with the override switch. It seems to be stuck.

It’s never been in salt water and there’s no obvious corrosion. She is just old and dirty. When I get bored I’ll tear it apart and have a good look at everything.

EDIT… Here’s a photograph where you can almost see the bent shaft or handle.
