    @FishnTx snake is easiest and cheapest. Otherwise you'll need to keep crickets at the house for lizards.

    I think you and your wife would like a crested gecko (kinda a goth feel :D). They're really cool, no UV light, and don't need huge tanks.

    Also consider African fat-tailed gecko (or leopard gecko but everyone has those).
