    I don't know California law, and the situation probably wouldn't amount to this happening.

    There is how ever the possibility that if a motorist runs fake plates on a vehicle. The police could confiscate your fake tags, along with your real tags, and impound your vehicle until you obtain new tags for your vehicle.

    That usually only happens if you don't have insurance or an up to date registration.

    But again the police could probably confiscate your plates for that violation if they want to. Again I don't know how that would play out in California, that does happen in other states.
