Thanks for the feedback, it sounds like we have similar situations. The sleeping platform in the 4runner didn't have enough room to fully sit up but I could comfortably fully stretch out. It was nice on the night in Gunnison when it started raining and the temps dropped down to the upper 30's. I was happy to be off of the ground and knowing that if it got too cold, I could start the engine and turn on the rear heater. I really need to make a V2 with the lessons that I gained while using it on the trip. The biggest one is that it needed to be taller to get more useful storage underneath, which will leave even less head space. That isn't too appealing. A physically bigger vehicle, like an 80 series LC or even a full size pick up truck would probably be the most realistic option for me if it comes down to truck/SUV camping. There's no real vast open spaces where I live for camping/exploring so I need to keep that in mind as well.

We need something better than a "like" button for uber coolness such as this.

How about a mid rise topper like the ARE MX or Leer version and a wheel well height sleeping platform. Add a awning with an enclosure if you need more “living space”.

A couple of rear window decals...

I've been using an 8' ARB awning with the room for my tent attached to my utility trailer. If you could figure a way to mount it on your truck, with a cot it makes for a very comfortable means of camping. I personally don't like camping on the ground anymore, and I like to be able to stand up to get dressed in the morning. My other favored option is to hammock camp. I always bring both, time is usually the deciding factor in which I use. The hammock is quicker to set up but lacks much privacy and anywhere for the dog. The ARB is easier to get in and out of and has all the privacy but it takes twice as long to set up. I have an RTT that I can mount on the truck, but I don't find it to be as comfortable as my other options and I have to pack up camp if I want to go somewhere in the truck.

Both of these pics were taken on my trip out west last fall.

That's a horrible idea. What time?
If it wasn't for the dog issue, I'd keep things the way they are. I like being off the ground. The 14" bed rack would be another hindrance to a bed platform. I would need to keep it as the platform would mean moving the recovery gear to the exterior.

I like the ARB idea and was thinking about that. I have a hammock as well, but I have a CPAP machine I need to consider as well as the dog, so it's pretty much a lazy back yard day kind of thing.

The ARB is what I have also. The awning room has a large zippered door on the back side to allow access to doors on an SUV (topper windoors in my case). There are also separate cable pass through openings on the back wall. You could run your CPAP power cord back to your bed very easy if that is where your power supply is located. Overall height is the only thing you will need to work out but would be any enough to fab up some awning brackets and risers to your bed rack.
