    Sorry for all the questions!!
Looking on the website...do we require both the ORV license and the permit?

Not sure of all the details, sorry. I am embarrassed to say that I live 2 hours away and have never been. Get on the Michigan. Gov / recreation website you should be able to find everything.

I believe it is annual. Luckily for you, Lake County (Baldwin area) has the most ORV trails in the state so there's no shortage of shops that sell the stickers. I don't believe they're that expensive either.

    Does this make sense....

When an ORV license and/or trail permit is required
Both the ORV license and trail permit are valid for one year, which begins April 1 and ends March 31 of the following year.

An ORV license is required to ride eligible county roads, frozen surface of public waters, state forest roads (open to ORV use) and eligible national forest roads.

    • The cost is $26.25.
    • A license is not required to operate on private lands.
    • Both the ORV license and trail permit are valid for one year, which begins April 1 and ends March 31 of the following year.
An ORV trail permit is required when operating on state-designated ORV trails and scramble areas.

    • The cost is $10 (plus $26.25 for the ORV license) for a total of $36.25.
    • ORV trail permits are not valid as a stand-alone license; an ORV license must also be purchased.
    • A trail permit is not required to operate on private lands.

Do you have to have a state park sticker in addition to ORV and trail permits? I'm pretty sure silver lake sand dunes is a state park.

Silver lake is a State Park.
You will need to have a State Park recreational pass. You can buy it at the gate or pay for it when you reserve a spot online.

You will need an ORV sticker for going on the dunes.

I don't know if the trail sticker is required for the dunes. I never buy one since all I do is drive forest roads and they are not considered off road trails...yet.

Silver Lake is worth it! Have you already booked camping or lodging? Word I heard was camping is scarce at all Michigan State Park campgrounds.

I purchased the suction cup type flag mount for my Tacoma that stuck to the bumper and the side of the headlight. I believe the shop that outfitted my trucks is called “duneland”.

I kept airing down each pass - I think I ended up around 9psi when it was finally biting best with stock tires.

I also learned after we left that on third gens that there is multiple traction control settings so hitting it once did not deactivate it completely. You need to press and hold it to turn it off completely.

I went to silver lake sand dunes in 1982 before it was directional. Those ambulances and wreckers were well used back then.

Basically there are 2 ORV stickers. Most people just get them both so they know they are covered.

While on any trails, correct. The only thing potentially holding you back would be access to the trail. Such as access to a state park like mention before, or an ORV park will require a day pass for admission.

here’s a like for the ORV license and permit:

    Now I'm getting confused...that didn't take long.
Do any of you have the Recreation Passport?
I assume that will allow access to any state park or ORV park instead of a daily pass?
Just want to make sure to relay the costs to the group.

Yes. The recreational passport can also be added to your registration (if you are in MI, that is).

This website has a bunch of info about Silver Lake. https://www2.dnr.state.mi.us/parksandtrails/Details.aspx?id=493&type=SPRK

The Rec passport will allow access to any Michigan State Park or Rec Area. If the ORV park is on private or county/municipal land the Recreation Passport may not allow access. I would check ahead of time with any ORV parks that you might visit.
