The Taco I drove was my 2001 TRD. It had Clutch Start Cancel but I never heard of Hill Hold. Please explain.

Toyota uses the brake system. When the truck is on an incline and the brakes are applied by the driver, the truck will keep the brakes engaged for about 1 to 1.5 seconds after the brake pedal is released. This is to allow the driver to get his foot off the brake pedal and on the accelerator pedal to start driving - without rolling backwards.
Works when the nose or tail is up-hill. (For a long time I thought it was for nose-high only situations.)

What a nightmare parking situation. Maybe some day you will come across something better. That sucks.

    Mine has it.

Damn I love this '17 SR! Finding out all sorts of bennies with it that other are missing out on.
You know how it works just from your wife car. But for others...
Try it out. Point your nose up-hill somewhere, hold the brake for a second; keep the clutch in and release the brakes. It should hesitate for a wee bit and a half before rolling backwards.

My wife's '16 CR-V had the same feature and that car was an AT.

It sounds more like he's engaging 4x4 for the 2Low mod. The reverse in the MT's is pretty tall so it can be difficult to back up an incline without stalling or slipping the clutch too much. 2Low drops the ratio back down to a more manageable ratio.

Lol, I've been commuting into and out of Boston with the truck since November on many Google guided tours of the suburbs and side streets with lots of hills. Pretty sure I would've noticed. Maybe I disabled it while digging through the configuration settings and completely forgot about it. I disabled a LOT of shit when I first got the truck. I still vent periodically about the shit that I can't disable.

Yes, my 2020 auto trans has hill hold too.

As an experiment, on a quiet, very steep side street. I came to a full stop. Let off the brake and it held for 1-2 seconds. Did not press the gas pedal to see what would happen. Hill hold released and the truck started to roll back and the engine died.

Lost power and the brakes went hard. Not a nice sensation. Was able to stop the truck with a little extra effort and started it back up after having to quickly put it in park.

Ah yes, I've read about you yanking fuses and components. I wonder if you did disable it inadvertently.
But then, I say NO! My trucks is just better than yours! :boink:

I'd feel bad for you, but since your time with yours is limited...

I don't recall seeing that feature on my 2017 TRD OR.
Is there some indicator on the dash when it engages?

Mine holds for about 2 seconds as well. I have noticed that it actually holds better on steeper hills over a slight incline. If it's not steep enough it will roll back which I find a little strange but it is what it is. At least it holds when I need it most.

Lol, only fuse I pulled was for the DCM. Yeah, finding out about that did put an immediate halt to all the mods I had planned which makes me kind of sad. It still amazes me that the truck is easier to shift that my wife's Subie. I'm keeping my current mods though so that I can put them on the next truck when I get back. I should also have a lot more money to play with at that time so I can go full bore.

You wouldn't notice any hill-holder system if you utilized the hand operated parking brake on an up-hill start. Is that a normal technique for you?

No there are no lights. It just holds when letting off the brake and doesn't roll back.
