My ‘21 with AT has it. If it does begin to roll backwards it sounds similar to the noise crawl control makes, although it could be the ABS system? :notsure:

Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!
My '17 Sport MT has hill hold, too. Took some fun away that I had with my previous truck. There's a clutch-burner hill with a traffic light at the top on my way home from work. If someone was right on my bumper at the light, I used to enjoy rolling back on them when the light turned green. I awarded myself 1 point if I got them to lay on the horn. Panicked look on the driver's face was a bonus.

I remember reading in the manual there's some button-pushing sequence that disables it. The back end of the Tacoma sits too high for me to accurately judge distance to the "butt-sniffer" anyway, so I just leave it enabled.

No kidding? Going to have to think about that one for a while. Sure can't think of anything in the transmission to make noise just now. The ABS is a chatterbox! so you might have it nailed with that suggestion.

I can hear my brakes release with a "thud", but then silence.

Hadn't seen any documentation about disabling it, but hadn't looked for it either. @huskcummerbund has that accomplished without trying, he is just that good!

You can still have fun, if you're confident in the distance. The brake does release completely in a second or two; so just wait for it, then roll, and then smoke those tires!

Of course they may already be on the horn since you didn't jump at the first change of tint from red to green, like some honkers do! Grrrrr

I’m going to go test it this afternoon; lots of hills in my neck of the woods. I’ll post my findings later.

That's interesting. Mine doesn't make any noise when holding or when it releases.

I won't say I hear it every time, but that may simply be that I'm used to it now. But then also, it may have something to do with the steepness of said hill. ?? Or wet weather. Or hot brakes. Or little-used brakes (you know haw they can surface rust on you over night?). I'll try to pay better attention.

Cappy, one good thing I can say about that dang driveway hill - it sure makes for EASY bump starts in the morning!
(My batt gets a charge without first being discharged any.)

So this conversation has made me curious so I dug up the manual for the truck. Every indication in the manual says that Hill Start Assist only operates in D-1-2-3. It doesn't say anything about a manual transmission. That seems like a very weird thing to me.

No kidding? Also very weird because the MT would benefit the MOST from such a feature!
Mine is a manual transmission. Five speed. It definitely has a hill holder feature. And it works in reverse too.

I'm in a different state than my truck right now so I can't look in my actual owners manual (know it's on-line, but that is (or should be) up-dated from 2017) and I'd like to see the actual book which came with the truck. Maybe tomorrow, depending on flights.

Does your manual say if it matters as to whether the nose is pointed up hill or down?

My VWs had it, although after a few seconds or so it would release and roll back.

Alright doll-face, c'mon and bore me!
This one comes up from time to time. Sports have it. TRD ORs and PROs don't because of the brake booster.

Hmmm, didn't realize the '17 had the 5-speed still. I thought all 3rd gen Tacos had the 6-speed MT. It looks like @Ruminator has remembered while you have it and I don't though.

Ohhh yeah... completely forgot about that. It doesn't many any sense, but I do remember seeing that pop up on here before. Hats off to you! I'll have to add that to the list of weird design decisions that make me scratch my head.

@Ruminator to the rescue. Thanks for that.

My wife found my truck as a left-over on a dealer's lot 50 miles away. (a guy ordered it, it never showed up; he went somewhere else, it showed up two days later). She tells me about it, we drive down to see it. Test drove it. Brought it home all in the same day. It was everything I hoped for except the color. But now I love the color too. (VW had just bought back our diesel so I paid cash for the Tacoma, free & clear.) And my smile gets bigger every day I drive it.

Built in Oct'16 in SAT, TX. I bought it Jan'17. Join TW Feb'17 and have been broke every since.
But three pedals, six foot bed, engine built in Japan, access cab, four by four, hill holder, go-pro mount on the windshield to hold my Garmin dash cam, no fob - only key operated (not your taste I know), heated mirrors, and a CD player all put me into a personally perfect set-up! And truly, the list goes on...!
