I've searched to no real avail. What is the difference between the mechanical LSD in my '06 Sport, and a "clutch-style" LSD?

Are there any pics out there to show the difference. I had an Auburn LSD in a 10 bolt rear of a Blazer, anything like that?

Sorry for a bringing up something that has probably been covered!!

Thanks for any and all help.

Thanks all!! I get it now.

I kinda hope it holds up to some "mild" wheeling. I was thinking a future selectable locker for the front. I like the drivability of the LSD. It seems to work pretty good so far. I haven't done much mud or hill climbing yet, just some deeper snow! Who knows, maybe go with a locked rear too? I'm done spending for a while though, I like my nuts right where they are!:D

Meh, mine gets abused daily, and still runs like new. As long as you dont run crappy gear oil that will cake the plates you will be fine. :)

    Why the word 'simulate'?

Rather the low traction tire rotation is slowed by clutches inside a differential or by the brake pads/ shoes on the wheel... both methods slow the spinning/ slipping... yes?

Are not the brakes an 'actual part', too?

The brake limited slip system actually works very well... and it is cheaper to service the brakes than the differential!

Go with the selectable locker in the front FIRST.....and have some fun with it(and you can keep the LSD for daily driving).

Okay, I understand what you mean now... Before it made it sound like TRAC wasn't really 'limited slip', and as we both know it is. Newbies to '09+ Tacos may think they have to buy after-market units if they don't think what Toyota gives us is 'real'...

THAT is the plan!:D But the locker is a ways down the road. I already overspent what I planned to, so some waiting time is due. I guess I'll just have to enjoy what I got!!:amen:

Any other type of LSD I've had has been easily overcome by the skinny pedal. This one seems to hold up well with steady pedal pressure. I'm impressed with it so far. But as I said before, all I've done, aside from pulling 3 vehicles out of ditches, is snow wheel on flat ground and on a motorcross track. I haven't had the balls to try hillclimbs in the snowy woods due to liking the way the body looks as is!:D Nor has there been any mud to play in.

I've seen your snow wheeling pics...SWEET!

meh it works very well. You should try it, you going to be impressed. What gear oil you have there and what additive?
Its my first winter with Synthetic and GM additive and I have to say Limited slip is working better then before. It lockups quicker and holds stronger. Sunday had to climb up 20% grade covered in ice with right side having sprinkle of sand for traction. That thing went up like it had a locker engaged. No skinny pedal had been used. And my truck is DBL LB so its heavy beast be pull up by the limited slipp.

Its probably GM additive that made the difference.

I figured out highlighted text needs some explanation. Short answer is NO.
Factory Limited slipp does not slow down the spinning axle. It simply attempts to prevent any axle from rotating slower then a carrier. Similar to how lockright works but instead of teeth you have clutchpacks. Because of the lock right like approach system will allow for you to hammer that thing all day long with out worry of boiling the fluid. Also for same reason you need to provide steady power otherwise it will unlock itself.
kudos  to whoever designed that factory unit.

To tell you the truth, I don't know what's in there. Whatever it came with when I bought. All fluids were changed before the sale at a dealership. It goes in next Sat. for free oil change lube etc. Part of the sale of the truck. I'm also getting it re-aligned. I raised the front susp. a week ago so it's had time to settle and I want to save my tires.

I will go ahead and change it to synthetic if it's not in there already. I'm pretty sure they said synthetics all through when I bought it, but who knows.

You say the GM additive is the way to go? Is that after whatever is in there, or wait and change it with the gearoil for the proper ratio?

Thanks for the info and support of my confidence in the factory rear. It hasn't failed me, but it's nice to learn a little more about it.

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
    I disagree.
ATRAC uses the brakes to reduce wheelspin.
LSD engages the differential and locks the axles, providing torque to the tire with more traction.
Brakes heating up trying to control wheelspin vs clutchpacks engaging is two totally different ballgames.
ATRAC is virtual, LSD is real.
    Not the same.
ATRAC will shut down your driveline, if there's not enough grip to move....LSD allows tire spin.
    I'll take tirespin every time.

Depending how long ago was change done. I doubt Toyota put synthetic there. Look at the bill or something like it. If you think you have regular oil then 15k miles is max you should be going on this thing. Mine was burned after 12K but I did heavy towing and every winter trucks runs
Yep 2 bottles (4oz each) of GM additive part number 1052358. Plus Mobil Delvac 75-90.
Problem with regular oil is, it tends to cake over the clutch plates (atleast in other clutch based Limited slipps) unless of course gets changed on some crazy interval. As synthetic oil goes I went with Delvac since its fleet oil with really no change interval. Figured if 80 000 LB 18 wheeler does not wear that oil out sure as hell 4000lb Tacoma won't either :D
However, some people used Mobil 1, Some used Amsoil, some used Redline ,Royal Purple etc..
