I updated my factory jbl head unit with a Sony 8100. I'm am looking at upgrading the speakers now. With it being a jbl system are the speakers in the truck now jbl speakers or the same regular ones. I am looking at either Kicker CS or DS replacements. Or If others have gone with a different set thY sounds good.

I don't know what speakers you have factory, but I installed the Kicker CS series 6×9's in the front doors and 6¼ in the rear doors. I powered them with an Alpine Power Pack amplifier. I am very happy with it. Yours should sound even better with an aftermarket headunit.

Are you using the factory headunit? If so, did you have to splice into your factory wiring to install the Alpine Power Pack amp?

I tried several factory replacements and didn't like any of them. I eventually went with 3 way components from infinity. The JBL ones are virtually identical. The 2.5" goes where the stock tweater goes, and the 1" tweeter goes in a hole cut in the door trim. It's a cheap part so even if you mess it up, it's not the end of the world. Let me know if you want more info.

Factory Premium Headunit, non JBL. I used Metra harness kits to make a plug and play harness. 20210825_080633.jpg

The amp is nice and small, it fit perfectly behind the climate control panel, where I zip tied it to a couple perfectly located metal support brackets.

How much did the installation of the amp help with the volume output of the rear speakers?

Honestly, it really didn't help that much for the rear, but it really helped drive the 6×9's. They have way better bass response and volume.

The rear output of the factory deck is pretty bad...

Any hissing when there isn't any music playing, ie between tracks? I've read a few reviews complaining about that but I'm not sure if that's just installation issues with bad ground, etc.

Just received some Infinity Reference 6x9 components, will be putting them up front hooked up to an 110watt RMS x2 amp for the front, and have some Infinity Reference 6.5 coaxials I'm going to put in the rear hooked up to my Infinity Primus 60watts RMS x 4 amp from my old truck. Will be using my old Kenwood DMX4707s for the time being then may put a buddy's Alpine ILX-W650 in at some point. Hopefully all should be good then. I would say if you can, go for components at the front, but you probably won't be disappointed with a good set of coaxials such as Infinity References or Kicker KS series, to name a few (many others). Good luck with your build, I'll be doing mine soon.

There is no hissing. The only thing I noticed was a light pop when powering down, but is quiet and not noticeable most of the time.

I’ve been wanting to do this, but hear it’s a huge pain. Do you have a thread you used to help you change it over?

I have the Alpine power pack and when I first installed it did have some hissing. But all I did was to tweak the gain on the power pack and no issues since.

The speakers are JBL, but they're not impressive ones. See my speaker upgrade here

That makes sense. Before install, I found a clean tune to play and found the highest volume setting before I heard distortion. After installing the amp, I turned the gains to minimum, played the same song at the highest distortion free setting and then adjusted the gains until they was distortion again, then turned them down until that was gone. That is where is now set and it sounds fantastic.
