The best way to cut a square-sized hole into the rear crossmember - plasma cutter or are people really getting in there with an angle grinder and cut off wheels?

I want to uninstall my hitch as it sits low as hell.

It'll be 1 step closer to pulling the rear bumper off and getting started on a DIY swingout.

The rear bumper is literally a plastic shield that molds around what's really the rear-most crossmember.

There are 4 threaded holes, with equal spacing where a hitch would normally be, just not for US models.

So I'll need to cut a square hole between those bolts, and slide in a hitch sleeve and weld it in place. For safety, I'll tie it in between the frame and run another crossmember to reinforce everything.

With the bumper cover off, from there I can make a "plate" that'll sit on the rear face of the bumper and do a DIY swingout from there.

 

its probably a 2.125x2.125" or 2.25x2.25" hole? if you can borrow a plasma or cutting torch it would be the quickest

I've seen people drill the corners then cut the sides with a Dremel though lol

 

It's meant for a class IV hitch.

Spacing between the bolts is larger than that.

I'm sure I can use the plasma cutter at work, I was just wondering if that's more often what people do. Unless some just cut out their rear crossmember altogether and weld a whole new setup?

So I can confirm, I found 1 extra OEM ADD CV axle in my other storage.

Needs rebuild though, one boot is ripped.

 

Ripped boots = air cooled and mud/dust lubed
