Exactly. People hide it in pictures, but they don't hide it while they drive around ALL day. I can get your license plate number as you drive down the road. Just by looking at it or by my dash cam recording it. Covering up your license plate number in pictures is only giving you a false sense of security.

I left my rear cab window open last night. Yesterday was beautiful.

Good news... Birds didn't squat and make a nest.
    Bad news... It's raining today.

well ( i know i need to change my profile pic) it does make it look a little better if time is taken. like blacking it out where the bumper is :p

on the real tho there isnt really an argument for it but if it makes someone feel better about posting i dont see a issue with it. some of us older crowd can be weary of this fangdangled new tech :p

I think it's more so you can't link an internet username to a real life truck. It's not about you seeing the license plate number which you can obviously do whenever, it's about knowing that truck specifically is attached to a username. That way if you wanted to cause some damage to a specific user you could theoretically look up the license plate and get a registration address.

Agreed. I don't care if you do it or don't do it. That's what makes you feel 'safe' or 'comfy'. But it's silly, because you don't protect your license plate 100% of the time. If you block it in pictures (for fear of someone getting your info), then you need to keep it covered up all the time.

None of this makes sense. The local DMV doesn't keep a record of my Tacoma World username.

As a cyber-security guy, and after spending plenty of time with S-2 and in various secure environments, it does make me feel better to erase the tag. A web scraper with OCR can easily pull up a lot of publicly available data based on very little information and use that for identity theft and other things. A few seconds in MS Paint is good peace of mind for me.

He's explaining to me...I have a Sport, DCSB...and I made a comment about the appearance--nothing derogatory, just amazement at the long bed on a Sport.

i get it.. it is a deterrent if anything. if someone wants that info about you and has the means to get it from a license plate they will get it regardless of what you post or not.

To some extent, correct. If a determined individual decided to target me they would get all the information they need eventually regardless of what I do with my photos. Just like a lock on a door keeps the honest people out. Methods like this help to prevent lazy people and scripts from getting easy info, and that's enough for me. If I was really paranoid I'd be like my buddy in the Army that went full-bore into cyber-security and dropped off the face of the internet.
