Does anyone here use OnX Offroad for mapping routes? I've experienced numerous defeats in the last two years on the Kaibab Plateau and the Vermillion Cliffs area using it. First defeat was trying to use it on an iPad Air 3 and not knowing it didn't have GPS listening capability. Ok, my fault. I have my iPhone XS and an inReach Explorer, to which I sync'd - and worked ok-ish, like if it wasn't on all the time it would lose it's direction, ie. it would show me looking forward on the map but traveling backwards. Power down and up, it worked great. Testing the dumb thing is difficult at home, since it poaches wifi to find it's location but up north where there isn't anything to poach, it just locks up. My Garmin Earthmate works well, it just doesn't have the road info that OnX does.

What else are you all using? My favorite areas are the GSENM, the whole Water Pocket Fold and N AZ, anywhere with red sandstone and potential for the un-expected encounter with an 800 year old granary. House of Rain was a great book.

My truck, in it's natural element, this past weekend.

So, everyone is different and has their own methods.. and that's why onX and others never worked for me. I use satellite imagery for mapping. It just works for me. I always have used it and just like being able to see and utilize landmarks, terrain, etc. Be able to "scout" a trail or see where it leads before commiting, etc. I ditched all that and just stuck with my Garmin Drivetrack (hunt/dog tracker) with Az Hunt Maps for the last like 5+ years. Forest service roads and other established trails have names, small two tracks sometimes don't, but at least I can see them. For out of state trips, I just download the satellite imagery of those areas we will be in prior and done. No worries of bugs or anything. No need of service or boosters. It's never failed me.

So what you are all saying is, remember to print your Mapquest papers before leaving like it’s 2005.

I mostly use Gaia GPS, and have been playing with CalTopo for redundancy.

I solo in remote backcountry a lot, so I always carry paper maps of the area I'm in and a compass...knowing how to land nav can save your ass when the tech fails.

Little bit of this and that
I use a combination of Backcountry Navigator, Avenza and Google Earth. For me having access to topos is invaluable for most of the places I like to hike/explore (VC, Butler Wash, pretty much anywhere in the greater Grand Gultch area). I've never had much luck with On X for mapping routes but it has been very helpful in figuring out who owns or has jurisdiction over an area (BLM, NP, FS or private) for dispersed camping purposes. I'm also old school and will print off maps of whatever area I'm visiting just as a cya.

That's also why I like Garmin Hunt Maps. Shows property lines, NF, Res, NP, etc.

    Ummm....stuff and more stuff
Have gone through a few different GPS apps. From my experience in AZ I found that Gaia GPS works best and use Garmin Hunt Maps as a backup.

Another thumbs up for Gaia. I am also a big fan of Northern AZ and Southern UT. It hasn't let me down yet. I also carry paper maps for both states, as well as a simple compass, just in case.

I've also been backpacking/hiking a lot recently, and it works just as well at those slower speeds.

I use Gaia as well hasn't let me down. Has multiple layers for satellite and tons of other options to view things like reservation boundaries and they are all downloadable offline.

For those of you who have driven to the East side of the river at Sheeps Bridge, did you drive across the dam at Catfish Point or is there another way to get there?

Nice, I picked up the 133 drain plug as well. What does the cast looking deal for, Extend your filter higher for better access?
I followed along with the conversation about the 133 plugs(valve), but didnt ask about that.
