Brake vs. Break - Daily Grammar lesson

I seem to see this mis-used all the time on this forum.

Brake -
noun, verb, braked, brak·ing. –noun 1. a device for slowing or stopping a vehicle or other moving mechanism by the absorption or transfer of the energy of momentum, usually by means of friction.

2. brakes, the drums, shoes, tubes, levers, etc., making up such a device on a vehicle.

3. anything that has a slowing or stopping effect...

Break -
–verb (used with object) 1. to smash, split, or divide into parts violently; reduce to pieces or fragments: He broke a vase.

2. to infringe, ignore, or act contrary to (a law, rule, promise, etc.): She broke her promise.

3. to dissolve or annul (often fol. by off ): to break off friendly relations with another country.

4. to fracture a bone of (some part of the body): He broke his leg.

5. to lacerate; wound: to break the skin....


Please feel free to add any other commonly used grammar mistakes.

 

The 'M' Macgyver should be capitalized as it is with all names.

Just last weak. I my breaks broke. I had no ideal what to do. I took a brake to think things over...recall, I didn't no what to do. The quite-time I took had an immediate affect. The knew pads I put on the breaks effected the rotors in a way I had not anticipated. If only I'd nown! I installed new pads and know they are quiet quite.

 

There's also a metal brake

Their:
adj. The possessive form of they.
1. Used as a modifier before a noun: their accomplishments; their home town.
2. Usage Problem His, her, or its: "It is fatal for anyone who writes to think of their sex" (Virginia Woolf).

They're:

Contraction for "They are"
They're going to the store.



It's: Contraction for "It is"
It's going to be a great day.

Its:
Possessive for it.
Virtue is its own reward.

 

And that grammar is spelled with two 'A's.

We all should have gotten these lessons in third grade! I am attending college after a short break of 37 years since high school. I can't believe some of the things English Composition students are turning in. We have to exchange papers in class and look for errors. It's unbelievable.
