Funny story. My dad said those words many times, but after saying it one time in particular, I looked over from my seat and the back and noticed that he was not wearing a belt. I smartly replied "you can't whip me, you don't have a belt on". My dad pulled the car over without saying a word. Popped the trunk, rummaged around a bit, then popped the hood and proceeded to pull the serpentine belt off the car....I guess he had a belt after all...

That was also a time when a cashier could figure out how much change you were due.

Did anyone else's mum make cooked Shredded Wheat?

Have to use the full size ones (not Mini).
Roll them over a couple of times in a bowl of warm saltwater, drain briefly.
Lay them on a pad of butter on a hot skillet, and flatten a wee bit.
Flip them over like a flapjack a couple of times until toasted.
Serve with syrup or jam. Delicious & warm --- and affordable.

Trouble now days if finding the full size Shredded Wheat. Not every where has it any more.

Nope, but cream of wheat was a regular staple.

There was this bar I used to frequent in my younger years. (It's now a mattress store, but I digress).
The bar used to have a similar cash register. I mean, you could flow a keg of beer through its innards and it would still work.
Of course, for the bartenders, this machine was great. All they had to do was ring up the price of whatever you were drinking. It didn't track inventory. The machine actually looked like an old jukebox... It belonged behind the bar.

    And then... technology...
The owner of the bar decided that a new fangled cash register would help him keep tabs on inventory.
For me, this wasn't really an issue, as I primarily drink tap beer, which in itself has a "loss" factor. But it made much more work for the bartenders.
Now they had to do their voodoo some other way, especially for those patrons who preferred to drink something that was more "countable" like bottled beer.
If two cases of ___ were consumed, but only one case was on the register tape, there would be a new bartender next week.

The bartender told me, "It was only a matter of time... He though he was making my life easier, in reality, he made my job harder..."

Many cashiers do not know the concept of "counting up" change to the amount tendered..... A lost art. You don't even need to do the math.

Who else misses the fact that the women that operated those could do so at a pace that would today's Wal-mart check-out person's eyes bleed, and never got stumped no matter what change you gave them to "even out" your total...

We ate hot shredded wheat sometimes, but we just put it in a bowl and poured hot milk and sugar on it.

My Grandma was a bookkeeper before adding machines were inexpensive enough to become common. She could total the books faster than someone with a machine, and with much less effort.

They weren’t electric, and you really had to punch those buttons and rack that lever.

We had the oatmeal and "farina" basically generic version of cream of wheat. I liked both with milk, raisins and sugar

Yeah, the cashiers of today are night and day different. When I was in high school, I had a part time job, sacking groceries, in a Safeway grocery store. Those cashiers were fast. They had to be. The company didn’t tolerate slackers. They expected employees to work, whether you were a cashier, a stocker, a sacker, a manager or whatever.

Later on, they moved me up to stocker which paid and extra $1.50 a day. I was rich!!!! LOL As a stocker we were required to put an absolute minimum of 60 cases per hour, on the shelves, or it was a demotion, back to sacker.

They would put you on a case count, probably once a month. You had to take the cases off the pallet, in the back of the store, put them on a cart, deliver them to the proper aisle and place them on the shelf, neatly. The most I ever did was 89 cases in an hour. I thought I was really moving, until I saw a guy put out 130 cases in an hour. I still don’t know how he did it.

Today, I would be surprised if some of these stockers put 20 cases out an hour. I recently visited with a grocery manager and he said cases counts are no longer allowed. Times are a changing!
