Confused about transfer cases (and yes I have looked through that one thread)

I need a new transfer case for my 2001 Tacoma 6cyl, AT, and I have the physical shifter for going into 4WD as well as the diff locker button. I have no clue which one to get. Any help is really appreciated.

I got one on ebay (well two actually, they messed up and mailed me two), both of them do not fit. My transfer case has two sensors and one rod coming out it. The ones I ordered (for a "6 cylinder, AT, automatic disconnecting differential") have three sensors and two rods coming out of them.

So I shopped around and found a scrap yard with the other option, which is "6 cylinder, AT, w/o automatic disconnecting differential; (with 2-4 selector)", had them send me pics to confirm, this one also has three sensors and two rods coming out of it.

What do I need to be searching for to find the right transfer case?

I may have been confused on what the auto disconnecting differential (ADD) is, but I thought that I had ADD since I didn't have to manually lock or unlock my hubs, I just press the button on the side of the 4WD shifter.

    Regardless, whether its the
6 cylinder, AT, automatic disconnecting differential
    or...
6 cylinder, AT, w/o automatic disconnecting differential; (with 2-4 selector)
Neither match what was in my truck, unless both salvage yards are messed up in how they labeled all three transfer cases.

The pictures are in the following order:
T Case from my truck, two sensors
T Case from my truck, one rod
T Case from ebay, three sensors (supposed to be w/ADD)
T Case from ebay, 2 rods (supposed to be w/ADD)
T Case from other salvage yard, 2 rods (supposed to be w/o ADD, w/2-4 selector)
    T case from my truck_2 sensors.jpg T Case from my truck_1 rod.jpg T case I received_3 sensors.jpg T case I received_2 rods.jpg T case w_o add w2_4 selector two rods.jpg

I got this from toyodiy.com, but when I drill down on the website to my transfer case is just shows that my truck could have either.

Looks like both those are J-shift cases. You need a push button case. ADD could be found on either, and yes, junk yards have no idea how to properly label them. The sensors can be swapped as needed to match your existing case.

Gotcha, thank you. Any idea if there is a specific part number for the push button cases?

All that came up on toyodiy was for part numbers was:
    36110-35321 W(*ADD)
    36110-35332W(2-4 SELECTOR)

I’d Go to Toyota website enter vin number, find the factory part number for your specific vin and then use that to find the proper t case.

I am a little confused by your description of what you have.

Does your t-case lever move straight forward to engage 4lo like this pic?

Or does it move in a J to engage 4lo. Note the shift pattern on the shifter knob.

I have, unfortunately it doesn't give me a part number for the transfer case. It tells me that it's with Auto disconnecting diff, but that is all.

I don't think you are going to find a part number for a brand new, from toyota, assembled, complete t-case. As far as I can tell, they only sell the components of a t-case, not complete cases.

@turbodb Dan do you know the difference between the single rod and the dual rod t-cases? Is that a manual/auto thing or a push button/j-shift thing? Or something else entirely?

I recall the shaft length being longer for the AT t-cases and that the sensors are swap-able. Was yours a dual rod case?

It's push button vs J shift. One of the shift rods is replaced with the actuator.

Yeah, I have push button one, easy to tell by looking at it, but ebay people just use a standard picture and scrap yards either won't or can't send a picture.

If anyone has one for sale, please let me know. Haven't seen anything in the for sale part of the forum yet.

I was able to snag one from the B/S/T. A guy was doing a part out of his rolled truck. Check it out. Post a WTB thread there.

^ This. I went through this rigamarole last fall when replacing mine. Unlike transmissions, there is no ID or part number of these entire TCs, which makes finding the right one tricky. I had to look around quite a bit for the right one. The other option would have been to rebuild/repair the one I had, which in some ways I wish I had.

I am pretty sure the the 50 post minimum only applies to creating a new for sale thread. You can post in other, already created for sale threads now.

Maybe do a little searching out older part out threads and post in them. Even if the OP doesn't have what you need, others will see your posts and let you know if they have something for you or know of someone who might.
