Porno Red interiors were pretty popular in the 80's.

    PLEASE READ AND RESPOND! :)

I would first like to tell everyone reading this that nothing bad happened and I ended up making a friend, but I found out that even my own neighborhood where homes are going for up to a million dollars, certain behaviors that I could easily get away less than a decade ago are not a good idea now. Within two miles of home, I ended up behind a late model metallic gray BMW 7-series; This car was registered in Pennsylvania, but had a license plate frame that said "BMW OF HAWAII". I couldn't help but wonder if the owner had bought it in Hawaii and then moved to Pennsylvania, or perhaps paid a crapload of money to have this car shipped to the mainland because it had the options and color combo they wanted. If I could afford a 7-series and the exact one I wanted was in Hawaii, I'd probably pay to have it shipped here...

Anyway, this car turned into my neighborhood, and went into the twin home development instead of the single-family development (My parents and I live in the singles); I followed, hoping to ask the guy about his car. I have done this a few times before in my own neighborhood and nothing bad has ever happened. So, the BMW pulls over, and I rolled down my passenger window and pulled up next to him. The driver was a black guy in his 30s, and he wasn't hostile, but he told me that he used to be a cop and wanted to make sure I wasn't following him. While he immediately knew I did not pose a threat because I asked him about his BMW while grinning from ear to ear, he asked me to "please not do that", but he was a very nice guy. He told that me he did in fact buy the car from a dealer in Hawaii, but he had never lived there and did in fact have it shipped from Hawaii because it was the only 7-series in the country with exact options and color combination he wanted. We were both stopped on a very narrow stretch of road that was made even narrower by the fact that people visiting relatives for Easter were parked in the street. I had to move so they could get by, so I drove forward and hung a U-turn; As I headed back in the opposite direction, the guy in the BMW stuck his hand out for me to stop. There was nobody coming in either direction, so I did.

We introduced ourselves and shook hands, and he showed me his very nice handgun; No, he did not brandish it. He had a license to carry and opened up the case to show me. Again, he used to be a cop in Philly. He then pulled a cardboard case out of the glovebox that said "BMW" on it and told me to open it. Inside were two leather keychains from BMW of Hawaii. We chatted about cars, guns, and the rising crime rate in Philly, among other things. The only reason we parted ways is because another car needed to get by, but he told me where he went target shooting and implied that he hoped to see me again sometime. This guy was very nice, and based on past experiences, I have a feeling that he knew I was on the autism spectrum even though I forgot to tell him this fact.

That said, after this encounter, I think it is best that I don't follow anything that isn't have a $500K+ supercar into a parking lot to ask the owner about their vehicle...

On flip side, when we were still living in Furlong, an older man followed my mom and me into our neighborhood to ask about the NAVAL AVIATION license plate frame on the Tacoma at the time; I did not feel the least bit threatened by this guy, but my mom and I both found it a little weird. In March 2021 while driving around Doylestown Borough, I pulled up alongside a guy in a 1984 Plymouth Colt Turbo and convinced him to pull into a parking lot so I could take pictures of his car; He was a total gearhead like me and knew that what he was driving was virtually nonexistent, so he gladly obliged.

Just last month, also in Doylestown, I followed an FJ62 Land Cruiser into a shopping center parking lot and asked the female owner if I could take pictures of it; She was very friendly. Historically, people have NOT ever felt threatened by him, regardless of gender or race; I think the guy in the BMW was initially a bit on edge because he was a former Philly cop who's likely seen some shit, and is driving a German luxury sedan, in a society where carjackings are on the rise. Again, he was very nice and figured out almost immediately that I was a car guy like him.

I say again that this was in my own neighborhood; Just about everyone within a mile of my parents' house knows both me and my truck. I would not have followed this car unless it drove into my neighborhood, but after this guy's initial reaction, I would say that a BMW 7-series isn't worth the trouble; No BMW is cheap, and a 7-series is well over a hundred grand, but there are quite a few people in my neighborhood driving BMWs and other vehicles in the $60K to $80K+ range and with inflation and ease with which people who have good credit can get financing, vehicles in this price range are hardly uncommon anymore. I guarantee you that this guy would have reacted bit differently if he was in a Ferrari or a McLaren...

I still have a pro-Ukraine message plastered on the tailgate, complete with Ukrainian flag magnets, but the bumper magnets of which you speak have been removed for now; I do have a faded sticker in the lower right corner of the rear window that says "I STAND WITH AMERICA'S COPS!" and a couple others that I can't discuss publicly on TW, so he might have seen those. However, there is nothing on my tailgate and thus nothing highly visible anymore.

I agree that it's best if you stop following vehicles; you just never know who you may be dealing with. You have excellent people skills, particularly for someone on the spectrum, but you don't want to get caught in a situation that you're unable to defuse.

As usual, i received no notification that you'd tagged me. You've got some juice around here so kindly tell the mods to get on the ball.

This thread is supposed to be about Aspergers Syndrome and other autism spectrum disorders, so while we are on the topic of both autism and police, I figured I'd talk about this...

Autistic Teen Missing for 3 Years Found Shivering Alone in Snow, Over 700 Miles from Home – Crime Online

I first heard it on the radio in the truck while driving around with Porter today, and what amazed me more than anything is that this teen was missing for nearly three years in an era when the feds can track down somebody via their IP address when they post something suspicious on social media. The kid initially ran way in May 2019 after his mom took his phone away, taking only his pet cat with him. He ran away a second time, aged sixteen, in September 2019; He lived in California and was found about 700 miles away in Utah. The police could not have handled it better in my opinion. One officer approached him carefully, not acting intimidating, and convinced him to get in the front seat of his squad car to warm up. The kid has since been reunited with his family; It is not entirely clear why he ran away the second time, but from what I've heard it would seem he was just upset about changes to his routine. How he got all the way to Utah unharmed is a mystery at this point as well.

I am blessed to have amazing parents, and while I got into feuds with them as a child, I never once contemplated running away from home; However, as an autistic adult who has met many other people on the spectrum, it does not surprise me that this kid ran away from home. I know people on the spectrum who have run away from home, and also people not on the spectrum who ran away from home!

I don't think he knew me, but cops are very good judges of character based purely on body language, so that probably had something to do with it...
