Crazy 45 minutes and not one person drove by or a patrol officer.

Where do stolen cars in Canada go? Chop shops?

A slightly different spin on the whole Castle Doctrine thing; back in 1976 I answered an add for a roommate in the San Diego area; the person who held the lease on the apartment was a police officer in a neighboring town and asked me if I had an issue with guns. That was when I told him I grew up in Michigan and had learned how to hunt as a pre-teen, and started with a Daisy BB-Gun when I was maybe five. He immediately took me down to the shooting range and taught me how to use all of the guns in his extensive collection; on the way back from the range he said, "If someone comes into the apartment when I'm not home, shoot'em dead; if he crawls out side before he dies, drag his ass back in and shoot'em dead again; just make sure the body is inside the apartment before the police get there."

So many keyboard tough guys posting up here. If you shot somebody over a $30-50k truck (that insurance will replace) you will spend 10 to 100 times the trucks value on legal fees defending yourself in civil and possibly criminal court.
I told my daughter last week if we ever got carjacked I would give them the truck and gas money as long as the two of us can walk away unharmed. The truck is replaceable, her and I are not. Property crime sucks but it’s only property.

Friends who ranch along the Texas border have this installed in their trucks. The thieves damage the vehicle but never take it.

I should add that I’m a LEO. Take the truck, leave us alone or get a face full of 40.
BTW, don’t follow the advice given above about dragging a body back into your apartment. Very, very bad advice.

On a post years ago, some guy was talking (theorizing?) of hooking up a fake OBD port with nothing but a high-charge capacitor on the other end. Smartkey thief plugs in the laptop or whatever device they use to reprogram the smartkey... blam. Instantly fried.

Yes, the AirTag works like you’ve stated.
I’ve modified my AirTag by removing the speaker to make the tag hard to find when they’re alerted that they’re being tracked.

I completely agree with this. It is just a truck, Murphy's law is always lurking around. You never know what could go wrong, and it is not worth a life. And yes, they are so many tough guys around here :D that have never been threatened or been in a life or death situation. You just don't know how you will react during these situations, and not to forget, that silver back gorilla is always going to be on your back when it happens ;)

Damn, wish those cameras had motion phone alerts so that you could have stopped them in the act.

Bro... Crime of opportunity means leaving it running while you run into the 7-11, not having it parked and locked overnight in your driveway in what looks like a nice neighborhood. That garage looks like it really only fits one car, and I'm guessing the wife's Touareg is in there.

Sure he could've installed a twitchier alarm, had a killswitch, club, name a million other ridiculous pain in the ass devices on his brand new truck... but at the end of the day you really have to step back and wonder, what the hell are we doing here?

This 100%, all it takes is a simple switch and some wire if you want to relocate the switch somewhere. Very easy and cheap theft deterrent.

Quick question? Would the Toyota Connect service [app] help in any way in a situation like this? like shut off, GPS loc, etc?

    Police officer hmmm.
Then you most of all should know not to leave your life in the hands of a criminal.
They do not think like you and I.
While I would gladly give my keys to go home safe, I’d rather end the threat to my family.
Also where do you draw the line?
How much would you be willing to give up before you defend your family. The truck? The house? The last of all your families food?
At what point is the theft threatening your survival.
    I don’t have the answers
    Just thinking

Right? OP said his insurance agent said it's hard to track with an airtag because they probably put the truck in a container. Did some googling and sure as shit, they drive it to Montreal and ship it over to Africa or the Middle East to be sold. This is according to CBC. Excuse me, what? How little does Canada's version of customs and export control give a shit that hundreds of stolen vehicles can be shipped out?

    Aftermarket alarms
    Kill switches
    Motion lights/cameras
    Parking in a garage
Claiming to be willing to shoot and bury a human being in your yard
Chaining a goddamn pit bull to your door handle

None of those things alone will 100% prevent vehicle theft but layering as many together as possible (or applicable) increase the likelihood a potential thief will move on to an easier target. That said, literally nothing is 100% theft proof. If someone really wants your shit, they'll get your shit. Years ago, I had my non-running, steering wheel-locked, alarmed, with one flat tire 1977 Chevy pickup stolen from my side driveway in broad daylight....poof! Gone!

The real question is, what lengths are owners willing to go to, with the resources do they have available to them, to prevent theft? Everyone has they're own level of "security" that helps them sleep at night. And others have to deal with the resources they have available.

Also victim blaming is just about the douchiest thing a person can do. Insinuating the OP is responsible in any way is lame. Bringing up he should have parked in his garage is even more lame. We don't know what's behind that garage door. I have a garage, I still park my Tacoma in the driveway. Why? Because I have something more important in there im protecting. And even if I did have a garage to park my Tacoma in I'd feel weird about posting it in a thread where someone just had their vehicle stolen since it reeks of privilege. But that's just me.

Anyway, at the end of the day, we do the best we can with what we have....and make sure your insurance premiums are paid.

Condolences OP, you didn't deserve this, nobody does.

The dragging back in part was VERY bad advice. Beware tampering. Forensics folks are not idiots.

Just over 4 years ago I dealt with this castle doctrine thing first hand.
Gun rights sites had a field day with all sorts of stupid assumptions I left uncorrected.
I have never posted anywhere about it. Once you go thru it, it is no longer fodder for internet entertainment...but here goes.

A burglar broke in and I was home. I grabbed him (goal: capture) and he got away to the kitchen and was trapped.
He assaulted me with a heavy cook pot and attacked me with knives he found there.
I had gotten a phone pic of him and tried to call 911 which made him very angry (he was on parole for burglary).
When he tried to get to me with a butcher knife, I grabbed a gun and shot at him. He got away thru a door.

Police came (violent crimes unit) and were here for many hours.
With the news story pic and a tip, they found the him packing up at a motel to get out of Dodge.
Grand Jury upped the assault charges after I testified. DA was aggressive.
At the trial, introducing me before testimony, DA opened with "In the state of Oregon you can shoot someone that breaks into your house." He knew I was wary.
Burglar got about approx 12 years, serving 6 due to concurrency, without possibility of early release for any reason.
He previously went thru rehabilitation programs for early release for past burglaries.

In some states there is a "duty to retreat" which means (in layman's terms) you must run out of your house if someone breaks into it. WTF.
I now have quite a grasp of these issues, studying up to determine if some antigun nut could bring suit against me for defending myself IN MY HOME.
If someone is stealing your truck or catalytic converter, you are out of luck. Not a castle. If you hurt them with even a baseball bat you can be charged and sued.
You must watch and hope police are not busy. I make no judgement in this case.

if you actually read my post i was essentially say if he deactivated the alarm then it was atleast partially on him. Lots of people have a hard time reading that. If that wasnt the case then its not his fault. i dont think OP's truck horn and lights are triggered with the door opening (the same as mine)

I wouldnt call it a "regular" occurrence though it's definitely more prevalent in certain areas. Car theft in Canada is still much lower than in the US.

I can tell you that the RCMP are definitely involved in this though... A Mountie friend of mine just moved from major crimes unit in the west to the east and is involved in exactly these kind of crimes.

People who claim to be tough and how they'd blow another human being away always irks me. Have fun going to jail for murder.

Some places (like Virginia Beach) have awful garages. I have a nice middle-of-the-road house and I can baaarely fit my short bed Tacoma in there. It's a cultural thing I swear. West Coasters love their garages. My realtor was confused when I insisted on only looking at houses with Taco-sized garages ("Why? We don't get a ton of snow, most people park outside. Trust me bro, you won't park in it"). Even the nice houses have awkward side-loader garages and nobody parks in them, heck many of them get converted into bonus rooms. ANYWAY my point is yeah, victim-blaming is lame and it's no one's business how another man uses his garage.
