A couple weeks ago I decided to completely change direction in my truck buying habits. I put out a bunch of feelers for a '22 Tacoma and quickly learned that it was unlikely I was going to just walk in and buy one at MSRP, much less a discount. My current truck is a desirable trade (F350 psd) due to supply issues and that has worked in my favor.

I was able to negotiate a deal on a inbound, unspoken for, SR5 DCSB that will meet my needs from a smaller, somewhat local (50miles) dealer at straight MSRP. In the past I would have never considered MSRP on any generic car, but these are different times and I want the truck.

I got the call last night that the truck was in and am headed over this afternoon to pick it up and finalize the paperwork. The financial side of the deal is easy, the deal is simple straight cash so I'm not in need of any advice in that department.

With respect to going over the truck are there any specific trouble spots I should pay attention to during delivery? I've done a lot of reading and not seeing anything consistent pop up. Just covering my bases.

Looking forward to getting it and doing a few things, but for the most part it will just be a stocker.... I don't drive much anymore, and my serious 4x4 days are in the past. Primarily it will be used to pull a small 12' utility trailer around that I haul my UTV to the trails. I'm a bit older than average and the only thing I know I will be adding is a functional step bar to aid in getting my broken body in and out.

I will post the obligatory forum picture in a few days... but it's nothing special and I'm sure everybody knows what a Silver SR5 DCSB Tacoma looks like.

Look it over for any freight damage, make sure all accessories and options in the contract are there and check alignment of doors/moon roof. One of my Tacomas came with a moon roof that was completely out of alignment.

I’d also check the interior of the truck for any damage or poorly installed items.

welcome to the forum and good luck keeping it stock!

For sure, I say that now, but likely there will be a few things done. Been a car guy all my life and I've already visited the supercharger thread...

My experience with moonroofs has been shit too, I live in perpetual rain and after eventual failures of every sun/moonroof we have ever had I will never have another one on a rig that sleeps outdoors. This truck does not have one.

I will go over the body panels carefully and I hope that the dealer can put the door sills and weather mats in...
It is a very basic build:

    SR5 - Dynamic Nav Package
    Mats and Sills
    Bed lighting

Not much to screw up on the dealer end.

    Thanks for the welcome.

When we went to sign the papers for our Taco, we were in the dealerships garage bay, and it was very bright in there. So much that you could see what looked like scratches all over the truck. They offered to have it buffed professionally. Unfortunately their guy was unavailable for a few weeks, so I asked for a nice "long range" 2 way car started instead, and they gave it to us.

To be honest, I dont see the scratches at all, but gladly went along with it. Doesnt hurt to nit pic every little detail before signing those papers.

I am older 58, and have bought many a truck.
Only accept a dry truck in the light, never a wet truck and never a truck at night.
Before driving, check the engine bay, oil level, PS, Coolant, etc and make sure they are full.
Again, before driving, open and close all doors and check all body panel gaps.
Again, before driving, check the function of all switches and knobs.
When driving, make sure it shifts into 4hi as you drive around.
Visually check all functional operations. Check all the seats for spots.
This is what I do and it takes all of 5 minutes.

You've got just a couple years on me. Great advice. Will do. Delivery bay is new and covered, so I expect it to be dry and well lit. The dealerships I've visited seem to have been modernized/updated in the last few years.

Rear bumper misalignment was common. Thorough test drive. Laugh at there hard sell for all of the warranty crap that you will still be subjected to, even when paying cash (finance department role). Other than that, don't expect stellar mileage but a good dependable truck that is very capable off road in any trim package as a 4x4.

Age is a state of mind. I'm right there with you and refuse to consider being 'old' or 'older' :D

Congrats on the new truck @RustySocket  I hope the closing goes according to plan. Welcome to TW :hattip:

Sounds like you made out. Toyota product or aftermarket? That is something I would like to have.

I've already researched the warranty packages and have a number from a online dealer. Finance guy gets one shot at it and that's it. I'm not worried about the running gear, really only the technology items that your at the mercy of a dealer once out of warranty are of any concern and it's unlikely I will buy it anyway. Cars, in general, have always been pretty dynamic in my life and tend to not survive in my driveway for more than a few years and most gremlins tend to show up rather quickly during the first few years.

I always go prepared when I walk into a dealership to finalize a deal. Polite, but firm. I have only had to walk out of a dealership once in my life. I am non-emotional about this and actually have a second deal lined up should shit go sideways. This deal favors me by a few hundred dollars on a preferable color.

This place is small, it's a small community and I know some former employees so I don't really expect any games. But car dealers be car dealers so you never know...

Welcome and good advice above. The first thing I add to any Tacoma I have owned is a bed mat. It keeps anything you put in the bed from sliding around. I also added the bed step and my aging body really appreciates that addition. I have always followed the recommendation break in. Normal driving the first 1000 miles, no hard breaking the first 200 miles, no towing the first 500 miles, etc. I have owned and SR5 in the past and it’s a great trim level. The tires that come with the truck are ok for highway driving, but not great off road or on snow and ice. Congratulations on getting a great truck and also not paying above MSRP.

Check the roof for dents! If you find one, punch the headliner and see if you can knock it out. This happened to someone I know. :D

I've always put a soft tonneau and a bedrug in my sport trucks in the past. Possibly will do the same. Infinite more options today than in the past so its something I will research for sure. Fortunately I still have a beater for dump runs that is worth more to me just to have sitting around than it is to anyone else.

I was looking at the Toyota bed step, but it wasn't clear exactly how it mounted, kind of forgot about it and never looked further other than on the Build your vehicle site. I will have to look into that as the one thing I loved about my F350 was the integrated tailgate step.

lol.. if the roof has dents on delivery...

But I will be certain to take a look and check. An easy spot to overlook and miss for sure.

Just don't expect it to tow a decent size utility trailer with a UTV like a F350.
My tacoma pulling a 6x10 with a XP1000 ranger is about all it wants to tow. It likes a 5x8 with a honda rancher much better.
    And I have a PSD F250.
