This is one of the best ways to determine how to get the most out of your oil for your motor based on your driving conditions.

I've had oil analyzed on all our cars, trucks and motorcycles and have found any quality oil can be changed later than manufacture's recommendations based on our style of operation.

Sayre's Law is present in any oil change interval thread--In any dispute the intensity of feeling is inversely proportional to the value of the issues at stake.

I just took a nail and put a small hole in the oil pan so I have a controlled constant leak. This way I can add new oil all the time and it’s always 100% fresh without ever having to change it. Pretty sure I will get about 3 million miles out of it this way.

I remember when i bought my tacoma being told that the interval is 10k.. Still dont believe it and never really will. 5k is my max comfort zone.

With 4 vehicles in the family I put about 5K a year on each and change the oil once a year.

Why don’t the “engineers” correct the timing cover leak if they are so interested in optimally engineering the vehicle?

Wait, we are allowed to align our own floor mats? I hope there are dozens and dozens of threads on this, especially its frequency.

If the oil is brand new all the time you only have to change it every 25k. Some guys say 35k is ok if you run synthetic and up to 45k if you use amsoil and anything less is just wasting your money but I don’t care. 25k gives me peace of mind so that’s what I’m staying with.

I prefer to design it correctly versus inspecting it out.

But where did you get that comfort zone from? Where did people get 3,000 mile intervals to begin with? Or 5,000? Or 7,500? Like, a manual they actually read from 1970? A service tech from that place that helped them fix your vehicles in the '90s? Their mom? Do we even remember? Transmission shift points and oil changes, man. These are the things that make us get all clenched up and weird.

I'd have to say all my past oil changes were somewhere between the clean and dirty dipsticks, being a more amber color. Only time i've seen oil that dirty in the top pic. was when it use to come from a chevy 305 v8.

I put on somewhere between 2000-2700 miles a month on my truck. No way will I be changing the oil every other month. I don’t have time for that nonsense. I might check it at 8k miles but it’s always still clean. At 10k miles my set notification in Entune reminds me to change it. I might end up changing it at around 12k. It’s still pretty clean at that point but I figure I might as well do it. I’m almost at 100k right now and it has been working for me. I used to be in the 5k camp until I started using synthetic. And I hate recycling oil, even with 10-12k changes it seems to accumulate until I have time to take it to Auto Zone or wherever.

I had a ‘64 Beetle. Thankfully that was before group think was considered fact, but I still could never figure out when to flush the cooling system so I never did.
