Geez, if that were the case for me, i'd just get a bigger truck, or one with a bigger displacement engine.

 

I guess you have to initiate the complaint...then the dealer needs to verify it like a buddy of mine did on his 2019 once he rode in my truck seeing a major difference. Some dealers like where i bought my truck, i jokeingly told them i didn't want to come back 160 miles, and find it needed some upgrade to be done...have the truck ready as possible. They really did a nice job prepping the truck with everything i ordered.

 

I told the dealership it felt like the truck was gear hunting, and simply asked for the update when I took the truck in for the 15K toyotacare service. No questions asked.

 

I just flashed my 2019's ECU from 04B31 to 04B33.

Only put about 10 miles on it so far, so I'm sure it's still learning, but overall it feels like a completely different truck. Better shifting, better throttle response, and overall smoother driving experience.

I printed out the TSB and called my local (an hour away) Toyota dealer. I read them word for word the "Applicable Warranty" section of the TSB as I'm well under the 96 month/80K miles threshold. They said it would be a minimum of a $100 diagnostic charge even though I experience every issue list in the TSB, and the price would go up depending on their labor.

At that point I canceled the appointment they had started to make me and flashed it myself.

I used:
Cracked Techstream V14 from the forums
Fresh loaded Win10Pro laptop with all AV and networking disabled
Legitimate VF Tuner Tactric OpenPort 2.0 cable and dongle
Battery charger to maintain voltage
Turned off all truck electronics
Hooked up a voltmeter to monitor voltage
CUW 04B33 file from the TSB Update thread

10 minutes and it was done. Wish I would have done this a year ago. It's that large of a difference. I had planned to get a KDMaxx Pro tune, and I'm sure the tune is even better, but I think I'll hold off for now.

Since you got the Tactrix, you could get the vF Software Only license and then get tunes for pretty cheap? Note that vF is changing the policy on using the gray Tactrix, so unfortunately, you would need to jump on that soon.

I had planned to let the dealership do the TSB for me, but they were less than accommodating.. So I figured I'd take care of it rather than paying them.

I've actually got the orange (newer?) vF Tactrix dongle. I thought about looking into get the software license and tune packs, but seems like I can't buy the software separately since I already own the cable. Also looks like the 3.5L Tacoma Tune pack is $390 just for the tunes plus the cost of the software. I'm a Network Specialist for my day job, so I thought it would be fun to do, but I think I can pay someone to KDMax Pro tune my truck cheaper than the self installed vF route, unless I'm misunderstanding something..

The dealers should be 100% accommodating on the TSBs and Customizations. The push back shocks me for how little effort is involved. They spend more time dicking around with tire pressure and floor mat checks.



If you got an orange one, there is no rush. You just need to send vF a message as they don't list the Software Only item since too many folks get confused.

You can purchase individual tunes for less than a full TunePack. I have some easy edits to the vF tunes, if you go down that route for cheap. You could get completely setup for a lot less than you are thinking. The Software Only License is something like $229 now?

 

I can confirm that Mat has told me the software license only is available for $229 (as of April 2nd, 2022) if you have one of his orange cables.

A battery tender/charger should be fine.

 

So is my clear one I purchased from tactrix directly obsolete now for tunes? Sounds like I may have dragged me feet for too long.

 

Not just yet. He is say that after the next version launches, it will be though. Existing customers can only register one after that.

 

I bought my 2018 TRdOR in 2018 and thought the transmission sucked from the start. It made me mad. My dealer was being so difficult about doing the ECU upgrade, even for a fee, that I OVtuned it instead.
That process always drove me nuts because I suck with computers and always worried about breaking stuff.
Well I finally got a service tech who was training another guy, and he actually took the time help me get the ECU updated, for $174. Now my truck drives so much better. Four years later. I probably should have been a squeakier wheel, but I already have Old man emu suspension, so I squeak enough as is.

 

Fuck! That is highway robbery. If you were local, I would do it for free.

So I know this is an old thread but I was about to pull the trigger on the shift sense pro when I came across this thread. My question is, is there a way to know if I do have the newest software on my truck? I just bought a used 2020. Drives like a dog so I'm guessing no. Going to call some dealers tomorrow about getting it flashed. I'm guessing once I do that no sense in getting the shift sense part then right?

 

How it drives afterward may stop you from getting a SSP. You won't know that until you know your ECU ID or what the update feels like.

 

Also remember part of the reason it feels slow is the throttle in relation to your foot pressure . The flash makes that feel better also.
There is a product called sprint booster the will make the throttle react also.But get the flash and don’t be afraid to push the gas pedal a little harder when you drive . It’s a shorter stoke motor that likes to rev.Once you get used to it you should be fine .Regardless of what some people say here , it’s got plenty of power

 

Any reason to do the update on my 2020 that shifts fine to me and I'm happy with? I see an update for it mine is a az5cn vin or could it get better?

 

From my experience starting with 04B12 in 2017 to 04B13 and now 04B14, every update was noticeable and better. A lot of folks have echoed that, esp with these latest TSBs.

Some folks have said that the didn't notice much of anything.

Very few have noted that things did change for the worse. Do note that there is no going backward at the moment.
