relays can fail (especially in automotive environments) and should always be considered replaceable items, putting them in an inaccessible place by the 3rd light is very short sighted. IMO. If you are running new wiring, put the relay where it belongs, next to all the other relays, under the hood or drivers fuse box.

 

I have yet to install my BD4, but I’m thinking about putting the relay in the engine bay so I don’t hear the click inside the cab every time I step on the brakes

 

Any idea when they’ll be a group buy again?

 

Yeah, it just seems like relays should be located either under the hood or under the dash somewhere. The problem then becomes how to pick off the brake light signal in that area without mucking up the factory wiring.

Where do you think the brake light wiring originates from….

 

Mine are under the dash, along with relays for cam input connections and ECT on, and I don’t hear any of them. Maybe I’m getting def in my old age.

Small warning for some. I went to change my LED's today (Great warranty on BD BTW, replaced all 4 due to faded anodizing after ~2 years), and noticed some problems that needed attention once the light was removed.

1) Silicone I had used, has stained the paint. (can't remember what I used, but I do know I searched for non staining silicone, so much for that).
2) Some corrosion has appeared around the mounting clips. (more concerning).

Tried to get the best shots I could, but it's clear it's due to the stainless bolt having some form of galvanic reaction with the clip mount. That intern has transferred to the bodywork, and rusted under the paint in those areas. Very lucky it was contained to areas hidden by the light itself.
Just a quick fix as I didn't have the right paint. But sanded / grinded down all the areas, used some rust neutralizer, then hit it with primer (will go over with real paint & clear next week when I get some). Then replaced the clips with nut inserts.

@MESO What paint did you use? After 2 years still looks great, but I chipped it in a few places while flaffing about with it and would like to repaint when I come back to finish off the bodywork paint.

Wow! Great work refinishing the area. Was it hard to take off the 3rd brake light assembly? I should have purchased one like yours w/ the rear camera option, damn!

 

not hard, you just have to have a 10mm long socket with a swivel and take the two nuts off the back. I did mine without needing to remove the side panels.

 

Thanks, but it’s really a quick fix at the moment, and won’t last as it’s only primer. Real paint and clear will go on when I get some. Its super simply to take off the light. Took me longer to rewire the light than anything else. Yup the cam option was the only reason I replaced my light, super useful.

 

I’m curious to see what mine looks like. I just used the MESO gasket and have taken it off a few times when first done, but not since. I have had no leaks even after pressure washing and drive through car washes. Are you grounded via the nuts?

 

. No, ground is by passenger rear seatbelt area.

 

Ok, just comparing notes. I just have the stock connector, no extra changes.
