I actually like the boat and the light streaks. You can always sit around and wait for the boat to leave and then just get the skyline shot. I'm sure both would sell if you're marketing them.

Well the boat was anchored there. :p

I couldn't move around too much as there were other people there and more boats on either side so it wouldn't have really mattered!

I don't mind light streaks, they're interesting to me.

Alright guys, my buddy wants me to take pictures of his car. (not telling you what kind of car it is until I post up pics :spy:) I will tell you its a sports car though.

But my question is, when taking pictures of a car what is good for a background?

Sounds cliche but something that's not ugly. If you're stuck with ugly, use depth of field to control it.

Depending on the car (and color), industrial areas make nice backgrounds as do grassy hillsides. If you can find a road that allows you to pan, you can get some nice shots too.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the tip. I'll go ahead and tell the car so that will help you answer my question. The car is a red GTO.

And on panning...since I've never done it and I know it was talked about previously in this thread, anyways, I know what it is but im not sure how to do it. What settings do I use? Shutter, F stop, One shot, etc. And other tips would be much appreciated.

GTO would look cool at some abandoned factory. Make sure you take some stuff to detail the car.

Panning, in simple terms, is following the subject and taking a picture as you follow. For panning, shutter speed is most important so try setting the camera in shutter priority mode. Then set the shutter speed to say 1/125s, have the car drive past and shoot. Drop the shutter speed to 1/60th and try again. Slower shutter means more blur but also means you have to be spot on with respect to tracking and shutter release because you're relying on your ability to pan in order to get a nice sharp picture.

Also, it will help to use AI focus.

Awesome. Good info thanks. Ill practice panning some before the shoot. I also saw where yall talked about getting a wide stance and hold the camera firm so it gets good focus on the subject, correct?

And I like in a small town so you know what that means, Main Street is usually a good place for pictures. Might to a trip to the city for some good ones as well.

I would love to get some night shots of it too.

Yup. Stance is important. Keep the camera as steady as you can while panning (no up and down movement).

For the night shots, use a tripod and remote release for best results. You'll also want some lights. Surprisingly, a couple of LED flashlights aimed the right way might give you something good.

Alright I know the first one isn't all that great...but I liked it. The second one is the better of the two IMO. But a page or two back we were talking about my tamron lens being a little soft. I used the lens again on the second picture, used manual center focus and took the picture with a pretty fast shutter and an f/stop of 11 I think. Does the second picture look any sharper?

second one is definitely sharper, they're both pretty cool though.

No I didn't. The site I use to upload pictures gives you an option of what size you want to upload to. I use Imageshack.com

Yeah, always resize before uploading as those sites tend to soften the image quite a bit if you let them resize.

Ok when you say the long end....what is that? Width or Height? Sorry I feel stupid asking that.

    no prob dude.

in your first pic the long end would be the width, in your second pic the long end would be the height. You'll know if you changed the right one in photoshop if the other side automatically changes to something less than 1000 pixels.

Basically forums can't handle anything wider than 1024 pixels generally so you don't want your pic bigger than that.

Ok I got it now. So how do you post them on here? Cause I don't like doing the attachment where you gotta click on it to see the picture.
