Saw a thread that mentioned the Yakima clamp-on rack for the 3rd gen access cab but I haven't seen any review of it. Has anyone tried it? Or has anyone used anything similar? Just wanted any info before I buy.

I had one on my Tundra extended cab, then transferred it to my double cab when I changed vehicles. Had to change towers. Then gave it to my son for his Ford Ranger. Got myself a different (newer version) Yakima set up for my Tacoma then. Takes a bit to get everything squared up/even across the top and tightened down. VERY minimal rubbing above the doors after 5 years on current truck (white) and even less on the Tundra after 7 years (blue).

I guess it would depend on what you plan to carry up there. At times, I carried - a canoe, 1 or 2 kayaks, lumber (includes over my homemade bed rack) etc. with no issues.

I have a single clamp-on Yakima bar on my cab which I was able to line up (height-wise) with the bars on my cap. I remove it for the winter and reinstall in the spring. I also have no issues with paint rubbing.

I did add the wind fairing due to the noise from the rack.

    Awesome. Thank you!.
I think it is worth a try before I start drilling holes.

I had some on my 2013 for a couple of years to carry kayaks. I didn’t really like the look and design. Much prefer bed bars.

You should look closely at https://www.rhinorack.com/en-us/pro...t600-ditch-mount-black-2-bar-roof-rack_ja8414 if you are going to the roof.

The Yakima round bars are the most versatile for attachments, IMO. Got the aero style bars on my new set up and had to jerry-rig a set up to use my gunwale brackets for my extension ladder or son's canoe. Can't find any made to fit the aero shape, just round bars. Not sure what other attachments may be round bar only. Have seen different attachment pieces for kayak carriers, so you can just swap out the round bar parts for the universal mounting parts or vice versa.

Currently picking up all the Yakima parts for my daughter's new Subaru Forester so she can carry the kayak I just bought for her. Some used, mostly new parts.

Had a Thule one on my second gen Taco, looked kind of silly imo but otherwise incredibly useful for hauling longer stuff. One gripe was the wind noise from it. Opted for sliding tracracs with cantilever in the Tundra to fix said noise:thumbsup:.

Do these clamp to the inside door edges? I ran the Yakima clip on my Honda for a few years and they rubbed the paint down to bare metal. Maybe they've improved the design but whenever you've got metal on metal contact you will have paint issues.

they come with heavy duty clear rubber pieces that go between the clamp and the truck. You can also buy rubber at homedepot.
