My Doug Thorley's should be here in 4 more weeks. I absolutely loved them on my 2nd gen

Once youve painstakingly put a set on a 5VZ you really want them to pay off. And that just won't happen without boost

my truck would die every time i would go full throttle then to a stop without touching the gas pedal after...


the headers fixed that. Then me being teenager me.. i raced my 4x4 double cab against my fathers prerunner 3.4 with the same gear ratios.. my 01 WAS slightly faster. with the 32s to boot... the headers do something.. but i wouldnt expect earth shattering gains

 

Ive heard it can be a nightmare. I even mentioned it a couple times to the exhaust shop owner after he quoted me a fair price for the installation. This is the 3rd time I've worked with the shop and I've been very happy with the experience so far

 

From everything I've read they aren't worth the effort without accompanying boost. But, ymmv. My truck came with the TRD headers installed so I wasn't privy to the process of installing them which I gather is a royal pain in the ass

 

its about a 5 hour job. and i did it on a rusty ass engine.

 

Oh yeah, have a reputable shop install is a Good idea

Doug Thornley was a local guy. His grave is maybe 4 miles from my house and the shop owners were family friends so I'm really hoping for the best

 

Is the 3RZ just as bad? Should be half as bad or less, right?

I'll need to replace my aftermarket cast manifold (it's got a big CHINA stamp on it, so definitely not original) someday. Still very on the fence about shelling out for aftermarket or getting the mini-headers.

 

Don't quote me, but I believe the name has been sold and the current quality (if they really are family friends of the OG Thornley) they will be sad with the current build quality.

But they'll be better quality than cheap aftermarket ones.



Not the same, but I spent over 500 bucks on 2 different brands of aftermarket headers for my 3rz before I spent 370 on a stock 01-04 OEM header. I shoulda went with that from the get go

 

The 4cyl headers are much much easier to install afaik

 

If we're going by cylinders it's 2/3 as bad

 

Had them on my 3rz, I don't think they changed the sound at all and I don't think they did anything for power until I put the supercharger on. But I do think they're very Stout, they literally held my entire exhaust up when the hanger broke

 

Learn from my mistake. Your best best is to get an OEM mini tube header from an 01-04 3rz
