Ok, my dilemma is one of those which I commonly refer to as "1st World Problems..."

I've got a 2017 Double Cab TRD Off Road that I bought about 1 year old with 20k miles on it. It was sitting on a local Ford lot and the dealer and I worked out a good deal. It has a couple minor scratches, $3,000 Leer cap, and a spacer lift with factory spec tires. I pulled the factory coilovers and put on an OME lift and 33s. My 9th Toyota since Fall of 2000 and I'm happy with the truck, except for some minor nagging details...
As anyone in this forum knows, pre-owned vehicle values are ridiculous right now and the temptation is real every day. I've shopped the competition and the new Tacomas/4Runner/Tundras, but nothing is what I want. I feel like I need to cash in on the auto market mayhem, but need to replace my Tacoma with another 4x4 and probably a truck. In 1 moment my head tells me to keep it and just wait for the next Tacoma in early 2024, and in the next moment I think I need to sell and buy something to just get me through til the Gen4 Tacoma is here. Something that holds value really well like a new Subaru Crosstrek or a Rav4 or......???

CarMax has offered darn near what I paid for it 4 years and 56,000 miles ago and it could use a new gas door, rear shocks, and some paint touched up in 2 spots.

    Rational advice or suggestions appreciated!!

Place an order for a new truck, once it arrives actually on the lot a few months (?) from now. Then trade in/sell your current. Do not sell your truck until you have the keys to a replacement. Also pro tip: don't let the dealership know you have a trade-in until you go to sign the papers and have determined the final price of the new vehicle.

If you're going buy a more expensive truck and/or put more aftermarket doodads on the next one, you're most likely giving up money, not making money.

Sell it and drive a civic for the next 3 years until the market rebounds a little in sanity.

Always weigh the cost of a replacement including sales tax and registration. I can make a fortune on selling my house but it will cost me a fortune+ to buy another. Don’t just consider one end of the transaction.

Smartest move is to keep it. Looks to be in good shape & you didn't mention any issues. Neither the Crosstrek or Rav4 retain their value like a Taco.

Yep, in the same situation with my house too. Fortunately it's new in 2017 though and doesn't need anything yet

Crosstrek is pretty close actually, and my thinking is that it could be bought new without some of the markup of others.

Yeah, I talked to Toyota last week. Definitely no new trucks in sight for a bit.

Subi motors are garbage now. I know 3 people who have had nothing but problems. They used to be bullet proof back in the 70s and 80s.

I haven't completely thought this through. Sell everything and move to Venezuela for the next 3 years.

Had a 2018 Legacy, didn't really care for it. It was nice in the rain, I didn't have any problems with it. It was just boring and not a truck.

sounds to me like you're just itching for a change, and are using us to justify what you're already somewhat decided on.

me? i like having older vehicles. i HATE getting that registration renewal every year reminding me that my vehicle is newer than 8 years old with a commensurate fee for the newness.

You’re going to trade a good deal for a shitty deal and then pay tax on both. Sounds pretty shitty to me. There’s absolutely no guarantee this inflation and greed will ever go back to anywhere near where it was before the world fell apart. I think it will get a lot worse personally. I’ll be keeping my truck for a very long time (although that was always the plan).
