Overland Torque Tune (OTT) by Overland Tailor

So, I purchased my 22 DCSB TRD OR on 4/2. I went into the purchase knowing all to well that something was going to have to be done about the engine-trans communication or gearing. After plenty of research, mostly on this forum, thanks to all of you, I stumbled upon @trdquoc and the OTT 7.0 tune. Trdquoc was able to squeeze me into his schedule within 1 day. After meeting with him, the truck was ready for a test drive within a matter of minutes. Based off of his recommendation, we went with their "medium" level tune with "high" available via the ECT. My first push on the gas pedal revealed a much more responsive throttle. Once we got onto the main road, I was able to open her up and this is where the Tacoma came alive. I wasn't left wondering when my truck was going to accelerate. The truck made full use of each gear. The shifting points were beyond smooth. I'm not going to lie, I went into my appointment slightly apprehensive as to what all the tune was going to accomplish, however, I was willing to risk a few hundred dollars for some improvement. Now that I've been driving the truck for 2 days, I can say without a shadow of a doubt, the OTT 7.0 is worth far, far more than what they're charging for it. I can't recommend it enough. 2nd Gen question: is there a way to tune the transmission shifts differently when cruise control is on?
I really dislike the way my truck shifts with cruise control on, seems like it shifts down way down too soon going uphill and should hold the lower RPM gear longer. Without cruise the shifts seem good.

Really like the looks of the torque gains on the dyno chart, especially if that isn't at the expense of everyday fuel efficiency. 33s and pulling a 1500lb trailer, don't want to loose any more fuel efficiency but could use some more torque down low so it holds gears better (or so I would think)

Thanks to Lonestar Yota Tuning for pointing me to this thread in their Facebook post. We tried to load KDMax on my truck a couple times but it didn't take, haven't had a chance to try again with the update but I'm kind of glad because this seems more like what I'm interested in.

Great question!

There is only one set of operational shift tables that define the up/down shift scheduling. The same tables are used regardless of cruise control status. However, not all is lost as we do have some improvement in cruise control shifting/performance. I can't get too specific on how it's done, but through the calibration changes we've made to improve the output of the motor at virtually all RPM/Loads, we've enabled the truck to require less pedal input to maintain a given speed which leads to improved cruise control behavior. Additionally, the transmission shift points have been remapped in a way that will also further enhance the cruise control performance. Now, these changes aren't a specific cruise control remapping but rather general performance enhancing changes that as a side-effect all help improve the cruise controls ability to maintain speed in a given gear.

The real limitation is with the cruise control's logic and how it seemingly over compensates with more pedal than necessary. That's something we can't fix unfortunately.

The fuel economy concerns are valid and we have a good number of folks with the 2nd Gen tune (Over 400 tuned to date) that report improvements in economy. However, there are some who drive their truck in a manner or in conditions which lead to slightly less than stock fuel economy. It really will come down to how you drive, and the conditions the truck is in. Generally speaking you should see improved economy under high load (towing) conditions as these trucks are quite a bit over fueled and this is corrected in our tune.

See this is how I feel . With 315/75/16 and living on the Washington Coast we have hills and combination of steep grades need that lower end power . I drive hwy a lot due to work and we road trip on family vacations. Recently just bought a trailer to accommodate more room for the kids ,plus easier to pack a trailer with gear .

I'm ok with stock gearing . It's not a race car. For f sakes we have 6gears

 

Just so you're aware of what 6th gear actually is (not judging by any means here)... is that 6th gear is double overdrive. 6th gear for towing heavy loads is absolutely not recommended. Also turning 35's with stock gears while it's "okay" is a lot of rotating mass on your drivetrain. In physics by no means are you reducing the "work" your truck is doing, but having gears makes doing that same amount of work easier. Puts less stress on your truck's differential is one of the biggest components, and from there it makes the rest of your truck work less hard. It's no different than a single pulley versus a multiple pulley system.

Yeah I already have set plans next Feb to get 4.88s installed . To me if Toyota designed our trucks with a max towing capacity 6k lbs somewhere around there , which I'll never tow that or close to that with my truck I figured crap truck should be fine on stock gears with 315/75/16 . I know our yotas are tried true dependability and take a good beating which dd on hwy and occasionally off roading I'm within a safe area. 4yrs later of mods I'm sitting fat at 5400lbs with gear I'm sure I'm well of 6k lbs. I'm a maintenance whore and pay attention to every detail of my taco ask my wife it drives her nuts lol. I have no fear that my drivetrain is suffering . I give my truck breaks on long trips . I do push it hard on trips but with no intention to hurt it . With it pushing over 154k miles now and by next Feb I'm sure my truck will be happy for a regear. It will definitely give it more pep and be easier on it for it's higher miles . Be like a refresh for my taco. One lesson I learned this year and with as many miles I drive in a year I have to maintain the transmission once a year now . I tried going two years , but with my driving habits and mileage it needs to be done sooner . Shifting was getting sluggish . After my last transmission service it felt like the day I bought it . Quick and responsive on shifts mpgs were back up . It's cheap insurance man , transmissions are not cheap lol

 

Man, reading these testimonies, is really making me want to do this to my new '22 OR [Just got it this Tuesday]. So unless I am reading this wrong, the closest Tuner to me (in the Upper Michigan Area) is in Chicago?

Well I just loaded OTT 7.0 cruise control medium. I think it’s his latest tune? I dealt with John he was awesome. I even ran into an issue on my end and he is very responsive. I came from KDMax Pro+ and I really liked it a lot over the ovtune. PapaRee was great to work with. I needed to see what everyone was talking about when it came to OTT. I live in the NGA mountains and the OTT holds the correct gear going up the mountain until I get to the crest. The truck just seems stronger threw everything. I don’t beat on my truck I just need it to drive like a truck. I drove my neighbors 2008 Tacoma with the 4.0 and it drove so much better than my 3.5. Now I can say it feels like the 4.0. I could go on and on. If your on the fence try it out. I am very happy now and these tunes keep getting better. John said they are always looking to improve it so I look forward to it.

For those on the fence. @BortisYeltzen and @JustDSM did an incredible job on my tune. Stock gears with 35’s and it drives a million times better than it did on 265’s. Almost makes me question re gearing because it drives so well now. I actually have the juice to beat a yellow light. On a 91 tune got about an additional 40 ft lbs of torque all in the 2-3k rpm range and 15hp. All I can say is WOW what a difference. 100% worth the money. I don’t even care about mpg’s anymore because it’s so much more enjoyable to drive. Thanks again guys!
