Not knocking your mechanic, but before you spend any more money on parts, find a good shop that can dig into the OBD data and give you a better idea of what might be happening.

Had a similar issue like yours back when I had my 2002 2.4L. It was ~200k miles at the time.

I changed out spark plugs, same issue.

    I swap coils, same issues.

I took to a mechanic and check compression and one cylinder was very low. My mechanic suggested at the time to rebuild the top end with all new valve if I plan to keep it for a long time. I told him go ahead because I love that little Tacoma. It was my daily runabout at time.

So to answer your question, the head was rebuild only.

Drove it for another 100K miles until some drunk guy total it while parked in front of my house.

Edit: Total my Tacoma and 4Runner at the same time.

There was no coolant in the cylinder.

Regardless of what the outcome is, I would like the remaining three injectors replaced because one of them is new. My mechanic doesn't want me to spend anymore money on parts either; I just want the other three injectors replaced because I'm OCD like that!

Drove down to Levittown for a cruise night that ended up getting cancelled due to rain that never came; Wasn't totally uneventful because I got to drive on the highway and the truck performed well. It has a bit of a rough idle at times, but it ultimately run fine and the cruise control is working now.

Have you had timing chain worked on? Maybe getting a little slack in the chain?

Stopped by AutoZone to do a scan, and after chatting with a friend who's a Toyota tech, we figured out what is wrong with the cruise control...

The wheel speed sensor has been on the fritz for months, and that's why the damn cruise control isn't working!

Well, we figured out what's causing the cruise control to work intermittently; My truck has been throwing a code for the front left wheel speed sensor for months and I've been ignoring it. My mechanic is ordering the part today and will install it this Friday, so the cruise control issue should be dealt with.

The 150K mark is rapidly approaching, so I bought some commemorative stickers in preparation for this momentous occasion!
