My truck: Base model 5-spd manual, 2WD 2.5L engine, 116k.

I do have a cheapo bluetooth ODB, and the code that is being returned is C1231, or steering column sensor issue.

I took it back to the same shop and after a day of working on it they said they couldn't figure it out, and it will be 2 weeks before they can get a specialist in to look at it.

I also attempted to clear the VSC via this thread: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ibrate-your-vsc-computer-the-easy-way.467485/ ... everything went as described, but it did not solve the problem.

So now I am looking at having to take it to someone else and get a second opinion and possible fix (Toyota dealership maybe), and then go back to the first party with the bill.

They charged me $750 to install this cruise control. Needless to say, I am not a happy camper.

Anyone got any ideas or suggestions?

Could you look and see if the sensor is plugged in? Not sure where its mounted though.

The steering sensor is right behind the spiral cable or "clock spring". Maybe when they installed the cruise lever they unplugged something or damaged a wire.

Ah, do you think he could see it if he pulls the steering column covers off? If its right behind the clock spring the probably not. Multifunction switches kind of in the way

He would just have to pull the bottom cover off and see if it's infact plugged in.

    You have a 2.7l

    Is it a 5 lug?

Regardless, the installer gets to fix it.

You're right, my bad. It does have 5-lug tires. And you make a compelling argument; I had to rent a vehicle for my vacation plans now anyways, I should keep the onus of responsibility on their shoulders. However, I still want to learn as much as I can; simply having an OBD scanner eliminates a lot of BS and hand waving. And, I have to keep in mind the possibility that they are so incompetant (despite being well reviewed on google) that in the end they fail to fix it and I have to settle for a refund and do the fixing myself.

So, my thinking was I brought it back to their shop and they opened it up and checked these simple things, but actually I don't have any proof of that. It will be next Thurs before I have a chance to open it up myself and find out.
