Just picked up a 2019 TSS 2WD 4 cylinder Tacoma.

I use it for work always on the highway and some back roads in ranch areas every once and a while. I plan to keep it on 30” wheels and not add much weight to it probably keep it pretty stock.

From what I understand the 4 cylinders come with a 4.30 ratio rear diff. I was wondering if I would see any noticeable performance improvements re gearing to a 4.88?

I have a local shop that can do the job for $800.

Anyone have experience with the same situation I’m in or any opinions?

It’s a dog on the highway, being in 4th gear gets me to 3500 rpm doing about 70-80mph. I’m in lower texas so the fast lane usually is where I’m at but I find myself really giving it the beans to keep up on windy days or up on ramps.

4cyl vs 6cyl. Gearing won't help. Power helps.

Regearing absolutely will help drivability. Since you’ve got a double overdrive trans, I would think 4.88s would be a great option.

i put 295s on my 2.7L 2nd gen and ran it with stock 4.10 gears, then 4.88s, and also 5.29s. If you can deal with more revs on the hwy, and lower gas mileage as a result, then it’s a worthy upgrade imo.

The results should be even better with stock tires. On my v6 I went from 3.73s to 4.10s on stock tires and I could tell a difference for sure. Makes the truck feel peppier

That’s what I was hoping to hear. I kinda have a heavy foot and came from driving a Honda Civic so I was pretty use to moving quickly so that’s really what I’m after!

If you’ve got money in the budget a Detroit TrueTrac is an awesome upgrade too since everything will already be apart for the regear.

Sounds cheap for regear. You might find that the main difference is off the line and then in 6th gear with less change noticeable between the two.

I agree but if the v6 tacomas have similar issues I think this could be something worthwhile… maybe not as big as an improvement but still worth it maybe.

i live in south Texas Mexico is 30 mins away so cost of living housing and professional services are normally cheaper than upper states.

Not really any smoother, but it’s basically a super stout LSD that uses helical gears so there aren’t any clutch packs to wear out. Great on road manners as well.

Increasing your gear ratio will make the truck have a higher rpm in top gear at a given speed. Is that what you want?

I really just don’t want it to feel so sluggish. Right now I drive in s mode and never use 6th gear. I normally hold 4th for on ramps and passing and just hangout in 5th for the majority of my time on the highway. I’ve seen some people talk about how it helps improve the sluggish drive and how it improves uphill and in strong winds, but most have been people talking about their v6.

Trade it in for a taco with a v6 or a mustang.

I’ve been thinking about it but I worry about my mpg I’m a real estate photographer so I drove a tone just in the past month I put a little over 8k miles on it but I’ve averaged 22-25 mpg so I have been ok with that.

I work with a lot of home builders and sometimes in the middle of nowhere ranch land so going back to a car is a no go.

    maybe a v6 is the better choice…

Increasing your gear ratio might improve your 0-60 time by allowing you to better keep the engine in its peek horsepower rpm range, but at the cost of higher rpm in top gear which will cause more noise, fuel consumption, and wear on the engine on the hiway.

Regearing the 4 banger is going to cost you MPG too.

I’ve never been to the middle of no where ranch land, but what I have seen of it on tv you don’t need a pickup truck to haul some camera gear around in it. It seems popular to have 2wd pickups there due to the abundance of high traction surfaces.
