Huge question guys, I'm sending some basketball pictures into the local newspaper. Shot is raw file. Should I resize the pictures before I send them to them?

Haha alright...if the picture is 3888x2592 how big is it? Like on a paper how big?

And what kind of editing would you do? These are the four I plan on submitting. I know they aren't great but I'm still learning with sports. But how would you edit it?

Those are good! Maybe bump up the exposure a bit and they should be good.
What was the white balance set to?

On your camara its the button right below the AV button on the back next to the screen. You should probably just leave it on auto.

What you can do though is change the WB in digital photo professional (the program that your RAW photos automatically get opened with when you transfer the images.) Its one of the drop down menus on the tool palate. You can try messing with the white balance and see what effect it has on the photos.

I've been wanting to make a signature to put on them, but i'm not sure what to do. I can't think of a name I like....

Oh ok. I got ya. I upped the exposure a bit, helped the picture tremendously!

Newspapers dont run signatures they will crop it out, all of them can be improved with cropping, I dont know if I would submit the second or 3rd one, what size paper? Also you will need to provide cutline lnformation ( The who what, where, and why of whats in the Photo)

Portland Central High School forward#33 Bill Jones goes up for a shot against Atlanta West's #24 Steve Smith during action Tuesday night Feb 10, 2011 at Atlanta West gym. Portland Central's win clinched a Playoff berth for the team, the first in 10 years. (Star-Telegram Photo Mike Irvin)

Thats right newspaper Photographers have to do more than just take pictures and the cutlines are just as hard as the image making.

    Just trying to help out

I see what your saying, and appreciate the tips, they're great. Seeing as how I don't work for the paper and my first submittal are these pictures I'll still be learning what they want. I talked to the sports editor (hes at every game, he does the commentating) at the game last night and he said that they are always looking for pictures to put in the paper. He said just to e-mail them and he would try and use them. He also said he would get me a press pass so I can get into all sporting events around in the western part of the state.

At the current moment no money is involved. But I still have legal rights to the photos so if someone wants to call in and buy a certain photos they buy them from me. I don't really care about the money side of the newspaper right now. If people want to buy them thats cool. But being 18 and in the Advertising and Graphic Design business, with photography as a hobby and on the side I think its a great way to get my foot in the door to the newspaper for a later date with the graphic design side of it.
