Toyota Tacoma Leads Mid-Size Pickup Truck Sales in 2021

I like to keep in mind that Tacoma sells over 2.5 times the nearest competitor in the mid-size truck segment. We are the 800-pound gorilla.

Although it may seem outdated compared to its rivals, the good ol’ Tacoma soldiers on as the best-selling pickup in the mid-size truck segment. Toyota sold a whopping 252,520 Tacos last year, up from 238,806 units in 2020.

In second place, GM has bettered the Ford Ranger with the Detroit-based automaker’s Colorado and Canyon trucks. The Chevrolet-branded model sold 73,008 units whereas the GMC-branded pickup moved 24,125 units.

With 97,133 examples under its belt, GM has barely exceeded the Blue Oval’s full-year volume for the Ranger. More specifically, the four-cylinder turbo pickup sold a total of 94,755 units from January through December.

Next up, Stellantis lists the Jeep Gladiator with 89,712 examples of the breed, representing an improvement of 16 percent over the Wrangler-styled truck’s 2020 volume. Coming dead last, the Nissan Frontier moved 60,693 units and posted a huge improvement of 64.7 percent compared to 2020.

Not cheating, but I been window shopping the new midsize AT4X thats coming out too. Its gonna be a competitor. Way more road comfort, kinda plasticky in the cab in spots, but solid motor, mechanical auto locker and capable off road.

I think it is interesting the Frontier 3.8L has exactly the same bore and stroke as the GTR 3.8L. Nothing new there. I'm sure it's a peppy little truck.

They've been reusing sports car block specs in the consumer line for a long time.

The VQ40 grunt is one of the few things I miss about my old Frontier. But if the new model had been out last time I was truck shopping I might have never joined Taco World. TC Club Frontier wasn't nearly as fun as this place.

I just can't get behind GMs lackluster QC in recent years.

Can confirm, it is a peppy little truck. Very comfortable too.

There's a guy at my work that had a new colorado - sliders, snorkel, rtt, suspension, tires...the works. But he had a ton of problems with his. Admittedly, he rode it hard and offroaded it to the truck's limits, but to have bought the zr2 offroad version and have electrical, gearbox, and even major engine problems on a truck with so few miles is kinda ridiculous. Especially, the way it's marketed as being capable offroad. o_O The last year he had it, it was in the shop more than it was in his driveway. YMMV of course, but he became super frustrated, as expected.

    You know the one.

And I'm definitely no Jeep person, but at least their aftermarket support is strong.
