It seems like most of the overlanding/truck camping rigs out there all have roof top tents. I don't have one, I don't want one, and I'm building my truck out right away and I'd like some inspiration.

So guys and gals who kick it in ground tents. Can I see some pictures of your setups or rigs?

Ive been camping a lot over the years and always used a regular tent. I started seeing these RTTs and they were just dumb. I thought: “oh look at these fruitcakes with their fancy tents” Well not until I went camping in the cold and slept on the ground. It was terrible, even with all these clothes we were wearing.

Long story short, I got one about 6 months ago and man, it’s freaking awesome. No way im going back to sleeping on the ground. It really is night and day difference.

this is my camping rig that’s still a work in progress. I bought a used camper shell and decked system from FB marketplace.

we’ll be putting our camping gear in the drawers and tent camping.

we’ve got a big trip planned in 3 weeks to Mammoth Cave!

Extremely beautiful Ross Lake (a dam made Lake from Washington State) in the Skagit Valley Provincial Park. Unfortunately, this was before the mosquitoes showed up... we wondered why in mid August, that we could get a camp site short notice... much better to go late spring before Ross Lake gets flooded..

I have to say I think a rtt is in the near future.
Currently have an awning, kickass shower awning tent, waterport, green portable bathroom.

Just cause you don't have a RTT doesn't mean you have to kick it in a ground tent...

This frees the Tacoma up for this...

But in preparation for this summer's adventure, 30+ days from SoCal to NC, we added this for the kids...

    Can't overland without a rtt. That's a fact.

Regardless of status symbol or not, I highly recommend OP that you try one if you camp a lot. You may find/understand why do many swear by them. If you spend less than say 10 nights a year camping, the cost is hard to justify.

For fun though here is our first gen with the rtt and our third gen without.

dug out snow over new year’s to put my tent on the ground. Not fun. The snow camping itself was enjoyable but not the digging part. If I could just level out the truck and open a rtt, then I would have more motivation to go again.
