It is what it is. If you want it to go fast or pull hard it needs more RPMs. Once you get honest with yourself about that it's no big deal. It'll get up and move, you just have to give it more gas.

Maybe it's because I have a manual but I don't think the engine is weak. It's adequate, just different from truck engines I've had in the past.

the engine and trans aren't weak in this truck, its just tuned for fuel economy not burnouts. You can get a new tune or just mash the gas when you wanna go fast.

It’s a Camry engine put in a heavier vehicle. It’s not a 4.0 like it should be. But it still gets the job done.

“Both of the engines will be extremely distinguished from each other in power. As for the 4.0L, it will provide the maximum power output. The engine will provide 285 HP horsepower at 5600 rpm and 280 ft-lb torque at 4600 rpm.

On the other hand, the 3.5L engine will provide less power than the other one. Atthe maximum range, the engine will provide 278 HP horsepower at 5000 rpm and 265 ft-lb torque at 4000 rpm.”

You need to tune and run 91 octane to get those kinds of numbers. Normal output is 236 hp at 5200 rpm vs 278 hp at 6000 rpm for the 3.5

Difference is in rpms really. The 4.0 moves faster from a stand still than the 3.5 does. As a Californian, I understand why people complain about being under powered. We have to stop and go constantly.

ya, a 3.5 can rev higher then a 4.0 because of less mass in the pistons thus the higher rated rpm/ horsepower, and why you need to mash the gas to get it moving. Doesn't change what horsepower they are rated at though. Also the 3.5 uses direct injection which lets you run a leaner mixture without knocking, this also give hp gains.

Oh nevermind it seems the 4.0 can make those numbers on the versions with Dual VVT-i without tuning or 91 octane, unfortunately the only 4.0 put in Tacomas had standard VVT-i not the dual version.

Honestly doesn’t make a difference, either way, these trucks aren’t V8s.

    I don't think anyone makes a midsized truck with a v8, want a v8 by a tundra.

I know, just saying the power difference in both trucks doesn’t matter because they both weren’t V8s to begin with. Want a truck with real power, get a V8.
