My nephew knows I used to skate, and has tried a couple times to get me on a deck.... haven't done it since... well... at the latest, '98 before boot...
Figure it won't go very well....lol

Well, I haven't actually posted in here in.... well, at least a year, most likely longer.

Anyway, instead of reading through all this..
I finally caved and got a fiberglass cap for the Tacoma, and already getting aggravated with putting the bike in the bed.
I'm trying to avoid another hitch mount, but, seems that might be my be at bet, but, constantly putting it on, and off, plus the other issues.

Been trying with notching the cap for some of @Nimble9 s side rocks, that are sitting in the bed since I switched from the softopper...

Anyone have any creative solutions with a shortbed and cap? Or just suck it up, and get a hitch rack again?

do you ever do vacations/trips with your bike then stop in a city or stay at a hotel one night but have a ton of stuff in your bed?

i did once (didnt even have my bike) and had anxiety most of the night. luckily it was snowing in Ouray so I wasn't too worried about anyone stealing my stuff, but if i were in a bigger city like Grand Junction or a more touristy mountain town i'd be nervous.

 

I don't do hotels really. I did do an airbnb once in GJ my first time there, but they were riders so had a slot in their indoor rack for my bike. I'm out camping if I'm riding 99.9% of the time, which generally mitigates the issues you describe.

Still fridge is locked and chained to the bed, box with all my recovery gear is bolted through the bed bottom and locked closed. Dog hammock in the back covers the footwell, where I stash my clothes bag. Box on the roof locks as well.

 

If it makes you feel better, I would have had an equally snarky response for Bellingham.

I still have my stand alone 1up rock.

As it is, pulling the front wheel off to tossing it all in bed, can be... discouraging after 12-14 hours.

I leave bike cabled while traveling, fuel stops, etc.
When I stop for the night, I bring it in with me.
Whether tonneau with a soft-pod, or Softopper, etc, never had an issue.

i use my tonneau cover through the winter but put my rack on in summer to carry my tent and put bikes under. been thinking of a rsi cap for awhile, but with lead times the way they are i wouldn't get it until next summer.

its really only a problem like one or two nights a year, so not big.

i also get worried about leaving fly fishing stuff in my bed when i go out. maybe i should try a rack and bars that work with a tonneau cover

Oh and I’m in Indian Springs / Pelham now right beside Oak Mtn. If you biked back then you know the area kind of.

 

I used speed gear bike for a build a couple years ago and was very happy with the service, price, and final product. Rode them a few hundred miles and they were still perfectly true and tensioned when I sold them (would have kept but went 27.5 to 29)

 

The clear coat has just started peeling off the top tube of my 7 year old SC Tallboy 2 which has seen a lot of use and pretty much looks like crap cosmetically. I do have some clear tape on the down tube to minimize damage when tailgating. But I just did a mod which made my old bike feel like a new bike; I installed a -2° Works Components angled headset to slacken my 70° head tube angle to 68°. I’m not the world’s fastest or most skilled rider, quite the opposite to be honest, but it really feels different in a good way, even with my 2013 vintage seat tube angle, long chainstays with room for a 2x drivetrain (I went 1x a long time ago) etc. On my first ride with new headset at Ft Ord yesterday, on familiar trails, I set 11 Strava PR’s, on trail segments with 5 to 10 previous times. A worthwhile investment for 59 GBP ($77 US) with shipping, tax etc, and it came from the UK to California in about one week.

 

Getting ready for a quick trip to the farm. I put back the rear rack and I was able to fit the two big cases in between the bikes.

I'm not one to milk warranties but I know a handful of people that have gotten new frames from SC for clearcoat peeling, but if you are the original owner it might be worth looking into. Was really common on the 2015 Bronson and another year 5010.

 

I am the original owner since 2015. But I’m sure I couldn’t get a new TB2 frame so there would need to be some new Boost parts needed which would add up, though if course the end result would be pretty nice. And it’s hard to blame SC. The bike probably has 5-7k riding miles plus another 20-30k miles in/on the back of my truck in the weather. Besides, I like the patina. But thanks for the tip.

 

Got bit by the bike bug. Posted here a month or two back about how I picked up a 2010 Giant Trance 2 for cheap to get my feet wet on mtb's again, I got hooked and quickly realized how much I hated the size small (I was in between S and M), 26" wheels and 3x9 gearing. Made a leap to a 2018 GT Sanction Pro in a medium. First time with a dropper post, 27.5" wheels and first time riding a 1x11 and I'm absolutely in love. Came home at dark last night and the picture with the Tacoma came out blurry so the picture with my other car will suffice. I wanted a do-all bike that'll handle some pedaling on CT trails, that will also double up as a bike park weapon and I think this may be the one.
