I can say that I'm running the MTX275 and the Midland 6db gain whip antenna mounted on the hood with a hood mount next to the passenger front window. Range working off repeaters here in Albuquerque I can talk to people across the country. I want to get a ghost from them at some point. Off repeaters it will depend on line of sight. on a good day if the planets are aligned and just right I've been able to up to 5 miles in the city, then they start to break up badly.

welp i may have spoke to soon lol. tested it out last night on our repeater net. It definitely works well but i got a few comments that my 3db ghost antenna on the roof with a mag mount was marginally better. Not sure how the hell this is possible. Starting to scratch my head a little bit. Doing more testing, i'll report back on anything new. I'd say best thing to do is try a bunch of different set ups on your truck and figure out what works best. Hard part is not annoying your radio buddies doing 1million audio checks lol

So for the Ghost antenna or any other needing a ground plane, would this 12" aluminum plate work? I just installed a Sherpa Crows Nest rack on my topper and I was thinking I could mount a short antenna on this plate near the front of the topper (close to the cab) so it would be mostly out of the way.

yeah so swr on the laird i trimmed down a little bit and its perfect about 1.1 - 1.2. The midland 6db was pretty good as well. The ghost antenna wasnt as good on swr but still is tied for the best set up i have

I tried it with out trimming seemed fine. Swr was a little higher than optimal. I trimmed about 3/4” or maybe 1” off. Checked it again and swr was perfect 1.1. Couldn’t tell a difference with performance at all, I thought for sure I’d see a pick up in performance.

I have a MTX275 with the Laird BB4505CNS on a mount next to my passenger Ditch Light. Borrowed a SWR meter and it tested out in the range, so no trimming for my setup. I can pick up 20+ miles away. My buddy with the ghost antenna has problems at less than two miles, but his mounting location probably doesn't have the needed ground plane in the box of his Gladiator.

Nice. yeah it’s a solid set up for sure. That’s the exact laird I’ve got. I think the ghost works well only on the center of the roof or a big ground plane. If you don’t have a big ground plane the laird is 100% best option I think.

    A bunch..and no build thread!
Just picked up an MXT500 and ghost antenna. I'll be building my own mount for the Prinsu.

Have it mounted to my uptop overland roof rack. The form factor of this antenna is the best part outside of performance.
