it's not a built trans. Just a modified valve body. Quickens and firms up the shifts. ;)

Reading the A750E/F tech manual there's a couple of other things that only work in Drive (assuming the systems are the same as the tundra as I can only find the A750E/F tech manual wrt the tundra).

One is AI-Shift and the other is Accel/Decel Flex Lock up.

AI-Shift is designed to be cleverer about shifting on up and down slopes and Flex Lock is meant to improve mpg.

If you're shifting manually you don't care about those systems as you're making those decisions for the transmission.

Correct. And for those that dont know about the "Flex Lock up", it allows the torque converter to lock up either partially, or fully in 4th and 5th gears.

No. Only 4th and 5th. It might be able to lock in 3rd, but I cant find my notes on this.

aThe only ones I know of that lock in other gears, are heavy duty/industrial trannys. And those wont lock in first. The tranny in my Moms Cummins can lock in 3rd up thru 6th, but I dont think other trannys for light trucks do the same. My Buddies alison locks in 4th thru 6th.

probably considering how much time and effort toyota or any other dealer puts into the timing of the shifting in automatics in order to make them as fuel efficient as possible

I never use "D" unless I am on the highway. In town and mostly everywhere else. I use "4" and I frequently drop to 3. Seems to be just fine, although it d the tranny does have a little more slip ever since the 33's, I can feel the loss of power too and the 3.73's are much to high of gears to be running...wish I had at least 4.10's, more like 5.13's and 37's lol

I find that in town and city driving at speeds of about 40ish and less are better in 4 , you have better throttle response and available power on tap, but once I get to 45ish or on the freeway I slap it back to D... Been driving like this for about 1500 miles now and I'm averaging about 17 miles a gallon (mostly city mpg)..also it gives my TRD exhaust a deeper tone and it feels more spirited driving....
