Haven't been in for my first service on 2022 yet but if it starts knocking like that on the way home I think I'll rev it up till it blows. The they will have to replace the engine.

    Let us know the outcome.

I wouldn’t want the autopsy they would need to perform to even replace it with a new engine but that would be my minimum agreement. I’d lawyer-up and get my insurance involved otherwise.

Geo8866, forgot to add while waiting on the tow truck the service manager tried to call my cell to alert me that they had discovered oil on the pavement where my truck was parked at the dealer. By the time he called the damage was already done. I had clearly been leaking oil from the time I left the dealer and it eventually leaked enough to cause the engine knocking noise and trigger warning lights. Three mechanics I’ve talked to all stated that I have engine damage it’s just a matter of degree. Any other mechanics on this forum disagree?

You should find a sane person that you trust (which pretty much excludes all of us here) to help you sort and think through your options once they become known.

Remain calm and best of luck to you brother.

I agree. There will be some engine damage to what degree you won’t know until the engine is taken apart. Imo they owe you a long block and an extended warranty as a courtesy but not a new truck. Good luck and keep us posted.

Your situation absolutely sucks. And a similar thing happened to me on a 1987 Nissan while getting its first oil change (I'm old.) I saw a trail of oil leading into my driveway. I went under the car and unscrewed the drain plug with my hand. (That was the last oil change I ever let someone do on any car I owned.) I refilled the oil and had that car for over 100,000 trouble-free miles. I almost hope they find damage so they will have to replace your engine but there is still a chance that you did the right thing and stopped before any detectable damage was done. Please keep us informed.

Well that would certainly be cheaper than the lawyer route. Even if OP lost a couple grand he'd be farther ahead than if he kept the truck and wished for the best even with an extended warranty.

I will certainly update as more information flows in, hopefully within the next few days. In the meantime I will enjoy my loaner. You guys are awesome and thank you for the quick replies. Glad I finally joined the forum today!

You may actually be ok. If the limited oil was pumping and you pulled over shortly after the light came on. A quick scope will tell all. Try to get an at fault letter from the dealer. I bet they will offer to refund the free oil change and duck out.

The OP was losing oil at such a rapid rate that it left a puddle at the dealership in the time it took him to check out, and covered the underside of the vehicle over the course of 5 miles.

    There’s got to be damage.

Probably should've kept going to make sure you got a new engine, I would be ready with an attorney.

Also, send an oil sample in to Blackstone and they'll tell you what metals are in the oil and where they most likely came from.

Likely Rod Bearings at least have failed, who knows what else.
My guess is that the Engine is blown. I worked with a guy who had something similar happen, the Engine was out of Oil after a repair. He drove it maybe 10 miles before a Rod Bearing went.

Hook78, that’s my belief exactly which is why I’m going to try and get the truck replaced. Been driving Toyota trucks since 1984 with no concerns until now about longevity.

take it to another mechanic and have them check for any metal in the oil. If it was that bad you will still see more shavings.

Note to self, if ever a day comes where I allow someone else to change my oil and this happens- don’t stop driving until the engine seizes!

Forget damage now or later. Can you imagine the anxiety driving that around forever. Nope, I'm getting a new truck. If they won't give you one take it to the next dealer and trade it in.

It seems you caught it fast enough not to have caused too much damage but I am sure damage has been done. How much?? Going to be hard to tell. Flush the oil system, get a much longer warranty for the engine, drive for a while and if you don’t feel comfortable with it then trade it in. JMO sorry for what happened to you. Another reason I will not be using the dealer for the free oil changes.

Assuming there’s damage to the engine (or reason to believe there is), my baseline minimum expectation would be engine replacement and extended warranty. I don’t know that a brand new truck is a reasonable request in this scenario, but if you behave reasonably, can’t hurt to ask.
