Are we sure it’s rod knock? These high tech engines have vvt and other stuff that runs off oil pressure. Is it possible the valve train was noisy due to low pressure on the top end?

You mean a free extended warranty plus a new engine. My recent oil change experience with a dealer we have purchased 6 vehicles from has a “new” service group. I now take mine to a local shop and won’t darken the door step of the dealer for routine service again.

I have changed my vote now. I say new engine and don’t even bother with anything else. I have to agree with Batt700 now and say it’s most likely fucked.

That’s just it. You have dealership loyalty. You think a 20 year old entry level tech with a month of experience gives a fuck? No.

Demand a lifetime power train warranty because 150,000 miles down the road your engine might start making funny noises.

and don’t go back for oil changes. Do them yourself!

I couldn’t tell you exactly where it was coming from but I assure you it was noisy. First noise was as I described like an old octane knock. It got quickly worse from there. Looking under the truck after I stopped it what little oil remained in the engine was on the pavement by the time the tow truck got there.

Read through the conversation, it was about an engine replacement.

And of course a free warranty.

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
You're being ridiculous expecting a new truck. How did lack of oil damage the body? Interior? Suspension?
Extended Powertrain warranty? How does engine running out of oil damage the trans? Transfer case? Axles?
As stated, borescopes will tell you nothing. Your damage is in the bearings, and possibly the cams/lifters. No oil pressure for even a few seconds is all it takes. Cylinder wall scoring very likely won't happen that fast.
Pistons are coated, have been for years. They slap the piston wall all of the time. There isn't enough pressure to cause damage, the oil film
on the cylinder wall is all they need. The coating reduces friction. These days, every little bit helps fuel mileage.
Check the oil filter? Really? If there wasn't enough oil to create oil pressure, how would metal shavings get to the filter?
The dealer hasn't touched the truck yet, I'll almost guarantee it. It won't be looked at until the service manager is in the building.

OP, a long block is probably the best you'll get. The dealer will fight that tooth and nail. The good thing is, you have their truck, they will want it
back as soon as they can get it back. Not sure lawyering up is the best solution, but a consult couldn't hurt. Be firm but not ridiculous. You want to be made whole, they're the ones that fucked up. There is not a doubt in my mind that there is bearing damage. The bottom end needs to be redone. The long block is probably cheaper than the labor to tear down, measure and replace what needs to be replaced and reassembly.

FYI, I raced for almost 20 years. Built my own engines. I know what oil starvation will do, it gets expensive real quick.

And for the record, I don't look under my vehicle after an oil change, I trust (expect) dealer techs to be competent. Shit happens sometimes. Luckily not to me.

They have a coating to reduce friction on the piston skirt. Give me a moment and I’ll drag it up from the interwebz.

I bet the timing chains slipped a tooth or two when the tensioners lost oil pressure. I would push for a new motor

Thank you for the response. I understand asking for a replacement truck is shooting for the moon but it is not without precedent for an almost new vehicle to be replaced under such circumstances. Heck, my truck just had the tires rotated for the first time in February. It worries me a lot if engine replacement is in order that the process itself will lead to more issues being caused. All I can do is wait for their call that I’m sure will come sometime this week.

It really sucks what happened and that you have to deal with this but there is no way they will give you a new truck, there is absolutely no need for an entire new truck, at the minimum they should replace the engine.
Good luck and keep us posted

After seeing the oil coming out it probably would have been good to just keep driving down the road. Then you know nothing is being reused. Good luck

All you’ll get is a sorry and the keys back to your truck. You are just one customer. There are thousands more lining up to pay top dollar for tacomas that arent even built yet. It’s a business, they are not there to make friends.
Drive the shit out of that loaner. A few power burnouts, donuts and some jumps should be fun!

Not a pro…just an over eager hobbyist here. I have torn down several V8s and air cooled VWs. Motor is fucked 100%.

Motor replacement is fine if it is a factory replacement. May even be better than a new truck. Maybe new motor + a small DV payment?

    FWIW I Rannyhilled a 79 Firebird 301 accidentally back in the 90s.

hang tough they will make it right.
