Rannyhill...do you have any photos of how much oil was on the road after you pulled over? Do you know if the filter was still on the vehicle? Honestly it sound as if a complete loss of oil occurred, especially with the engine sounds and dash lights. It would be good to know if the filter was absent since that would definitely indicate a total loss. Doesn't take long for the oil pump to dump all that oil...or an oil pan bolt that dropped out and was missing.

Regardless, if you start working out a deal for getting a different truck, keep in mind that this dealer SHOULD NOT be making money off this situation. Hopefully the dealer will be reasonable. You have already suffered the loss of use of your new truck and all the crap that goes with it.

Spacecoast, I have pictures and videos of the mess on the underside and the remaining oil deposited in the parking lot prior to being towed. I’m confident especially with the information from the Service Manager about the puddle of oil being under the truck after I left the dealer that virtually all oil was gone by the time the tow truck arrived on scene.

Op said the dealer called him an said there was oil on the ground where they had parked his truck before he left. that tells me that the drain valve on the filter canister was somehow left open. only the oil in the canister would have drained out at the dealer while parked then when he drove away the oil started circulating and started flowing into the canister and started to drain out and it took like 4 miles until most of the oil was gone. explains why oil was all over the underside, drained out the valve hole and blew all over the place while driving.

To say it blew all over the place is a bit of an understatement. More accurate to describe it as a comprehensive application of a temporary rust proofing coating to the underside. Thank you for your input.

But it would be performed at a reduced rate for the mechanic. He won’t get the same amount of hours as he would if it weren’t similar to a warranty claim. A mechanic budgeted 20-30% fewer hours to perform the job is not the same guy doing it with 100% of the time actually needed to do it correctly.

Politely demand a new truck. You'll have to pay for it obviously. The dealer should buy back your truck, they will have no problem selling it for more than what you paid, once it's repaired and CERTIFIED. I doubt if the dealer or who ever else is involved will be interested in your intentions with your truck, no matter how nobel those intentions are.

I check my truck all the time and my Wife’s 4Runner twice as much because I don’t expect her to check anything. I spent 40 years turning wrenches and or supervising other mechanics. People who do not check out what they are driving are asking for trouble.

Sorry to hear this story, infortunately, not an original tale...

I bet OP will be checking after every service visit moving forward. Only takes a stripped bolt, lost rag, forgotten step, or other PITA mechanic screw up to lessen the joys of vehicle ownership.

For everyone saying he definitely won’t get a new truck, it’s doubtful, but it could happen......

Firstly, it sounds like the OP shut the engine down quickly and it wasn’t revving really high or under a huge load so it might run fine for the next 100,000+ miles (although I definitely wouldn’t want to own it or take that risk)

If the OP sticks-to-his-guns and politely demands a new engine, it might work-out to be cheaper for the dealer to fill his truck up with oil, and if it runs/sounds ok, give him a new truck and then just sell his to someone else without replacing the engine (stranger things have happened at dealerships)
It all depends on if the engine is truly fucked and the cost of parts+labour for a new engine (plus an extended warranty) outweighs the difference of the two truck values.

The dealer would also keep a loyal, long time customer and his family happy. Just sayin....

If it was my truck, I’d definitely want a new engine (not a Used or Reman’d engine) or a new truck......

    Work in Progress...
    @Rannyhill

I am curious where you are located... I had a similar experience last week, although the leak was not as bad as your's but I did receive a call from the dealership about oil on the ground where my truck was parked. Fortunately I was not far from the dealership

As a person who has worked in the aviation industry as an a&p mechanic, I can say some pilots do look and some don't. As far as doing a leak check, it is 100% the mechanics job and fault if the plane leaves with one, even down to getting arrested if someone dies because of it.

Good to hear, and I don't disagree with anything you said in this particular post. I personally do all of my own maintenance, assuming I have everything I need, because of experiences like OP's, and experiences of my own in the past. I'd rather not leave my truck's fate up to someone else if I have the means to do the work myself, but this thread isn't about whether you should or should not pay someone to do your oil changes for you. Its about paying for a service, the service not being done to the contracted extent, and resolution to be had for the shortcoming (at the expense of the dealer who caused the 'potential' damage). Its okay if we agree to disagree; I feel we can both go about our days and not lose any sleep over it. Now tell me, what kind of plane do you own:poking:. Kidding; but I do enjoy aviation :plane:

My younger Brother flys a two seater in Alaska. I promise my Brother knows every inch of that plane. As does he also knows every inch of his 27 foot boat

Quite the difference between aircraft and trucks. Not a very good comparison in my opinion. I guess you will tell me next I should have performed some form of assessment on my bilateral hip surgery before leaving the hospital.

Shit happens, mistakes get made, by everyone at some point. Too soon to write-off the entire dealership for one persons simple mistake.
The OP has had a good, long term relationship with them, I’d give them a chance to make it right first...

That’s exactly what I’m doing. Once the dealer approaches me with an offer I’m sure I’ll ask for some more advice from you guys. And thanks again to all who have taken an interest in this discussion.

That sucks. I hope everything works out for you. Curious to hear how the dealership will handle this situation.

Lets stop the chatter that on a dealer performed oil change that owners are suppose to ensure the work is done properly. How the hell a service tech can drive the vehicle out of the service bay without first validating that there are no oil leaks is beyond me. I'm not crawling under my Toyota after an oil change....that was his job. Yeah, I do pop the hood and check the oil level, but to think that there might not be a filter, or that the canister may still have the drain nipple is beyond incompetent. Let the dealer have and own this problem....totally. It is 100% their fault.

I hope the Dealership makes the OP whole on this but sadly the odds are they will not without causing the OP problems
