thanks! Hopefully that's all it is. I had just gotten confident in my fix last night so I wasn't comfortable posting any updates till today. :)

Although...now it looks like I have a coolant leak of some sort. the level in the reservoir just keeps dropping after a long night of sitting there.

Did you ever do a pressure test on the coolant system?

Quick google search says the thermostat opens around 190*F give or take. So if you're seeing temps in the low 200s, especially just idling, Id say you've still got an issue.

wasn't able to pressure test the coolant. can't find a tester with the correct adapter. but yes, i did see that it opens around 190. and it holds it there just perfectly fine. low 200's is a little bit on the high side but nothing too crazy. I feel comfortable neough tod rive it for now. I saw cylinder 5 was wayyyy too clean so maybe there is a leak there. :/

I'm willing to bet that you do indeed have a HG issue

Edit: I'm topping off my coolant system every week and a half - two weeks due to my own HG issue

Yeah. I suspect one in cylinder five because that cylinder looked steam cleaned. Which is funny because it's on the other bank from the problematic cylinder two. I'll continue topping off until i can get it to a trusted shop and worked on. this truck is causing me unexpected anxiety and stress.

Any update? Was this ever completely resolved? I replaced my thermostat on my 2006 TRD OR because the therm housing seal was leaking (I used OEM housing and thermostat in one), topped everything off, drove it, then topped reservoir off the next morning, it was on the low line, figured air bleeding out the heater core, then took it for a day trip in hot weather running A/C, checked coolant level next morning and full to the brim and could see where it overflowed onto the engine, started truck, could hear fluid/air gurgling in heater core, brought truck up to temperature thinking new thermostat would open and drop the reservoir level back down but it didn’t? I figured its air trapped in my heater core that pushed the extra coolant into the reservoir? I sucked out the additional coolant to the full line and my wife just drove it to work with the heater on full blast… I’ll recheck the overflow when she gets home, hopefully it’s low and the air burped out?

oh yeah, I guess my latest issue wasn't reported back. Eventually I got a thermostat replacement and a water pump replacement at the same time since it's so old. that was like a year ago. I noticed a ton of dried pink coolant around my thermostat+pump and on areas wher the belt was clearly throwing the coolant to the edges of the bay. everything's been gucci since.

I know this is an old thread...
Me looking at your pics I saw nothing more than an oil leak from the tube seal leaking onto the exterior of the sparkplug.
Glad you didnt go elbows deep into this one...

indeed didn't go much deeper. new plug, new coil, retorqued and all was good.

That’s good to know and the same reason I just replaced my thermostat and housing. I’m hoping my issue is just an air bubble in the system?

hopefully. if it's just air, give it a few jiggles and pushes on the hose, it'll eventually come out.

I do think you have an oil leak from the sparkplug well tube seal that is pressed into the valve cover...
Dont think that oil was coming up from inside the cylinder, up through the threads, & up onto the coil boot....
But replacing valve cover gasket & all the tube seals, isnt an unnecessary head gasket...
